Detailed Job Description

The Director of First Year Success (FYS) is responsible for providing visionary leadership and administrative oversight for all curricular initiatives of the program. The Director must have a scholarly record and teaching experience and be tenured at MSU Denver. Only current MSU Denver employees may be considered for this position.


The Director coordinates all curricular aspects of the First Year Success program, specifically the implementation and development of FYS learning communities. Primary responsibilities include program development, deliberate choice of courses and preparation of semester course schedules in concert with the appropriate department chairs, and integration of multiple program elements provided by various units on campus. Clear communication and coordination with academic departments and administrative units within Academic and Student Affairs is essential, as is a collaborative and team-based leadership style.
25% Research and report on best practices in first year experience programming. Identify and sustain successful learning community models. Facilitate ongoing curriculum development and improvements in collaboration with the First Year Success Advisory Board (FYSAB), FYS Staff, department chairs, and others, as appropriate. Expand the menu of gateway course options for new learning communities and improve the first to second year return rate for FYS students.
25 % Collaborate with academic departments to coordinate learning community offerings each semester. Facilitate the development of semester course schedules with best practices in mind. Provide on-going professional development and support for faculty teaching in the program in concert with the Center for Faculty Development. Facilitate faculty orientation events. Work with deans and department chairs to increase the number of full time faculty members teaching in FYS. Teach in a first year learning community as appropriate. Advise and edit respective FYS newsletters.
40 % Work with FYS Staff to implement a successful academic program for incoming students. Engage in effective collaboration in all program areas, such as advising strategies, student recruitment, co-curricular initiatives, diversity programs, peer mentor training and programming, supplemental instruction, faculty outreach and development, data analysis, and budgetary overview. Provide guidance and supervision to faculty assigned to FYS. Collaborate with staff in the Student Academic Success Center (SASC), New Student Orientation, and Academic Advising to ensure seamless support of students in FYS.
10% In concert with FYSAB, work closely with the Director of Student Persistence to identify achievable benchmarks and appropriate metrics for programmatic success in the areas of student retention and persistence to graduation.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a doctorate or terminal degree with at least six years of college teaching experience and be tenured at MSU Denver.

Must be a current MSU Denver employee.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate experience and vision related to learning community teaching and administration, first year college pedagogy, innovative learning strategies, cross disciplinary instruction, academic advising, and familiarity with best practice first year persistence strategies. Preference will also be given to candidates who show evidence of successful and collaborative departmental administrative and supervisory experience including course scheduling and curriculum development. Candidates need to demonstrate experience with and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse urban student population including non-traditional students, students of color, and first generation college students.
