Working Hours

One full-time (10 months per year), tenure-track faculty position, beginning in August 2015. The position is based in the Department of Sociology. The standard work week for this position is forty (40) hours. The standard instructional work week shall consist of thirty (30) hours of instructional time, curriculum development, preparation and student evaluation. The remaining time will consist of five (5) hours of student engagement (of which at least two (2) hours must be designated office hours), and five (5) hours of departmental activities and collegial governance (i.e., institutional service). The person selected for this position will be subject to assignment to any district facility during any hours of operation. 

Basic Function and Other Details

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION: 

The Department of Sociology is looking for a generalist sociologist who can be a visionary leader in a growing Women's Studies program. The person selected will share leadership roles with other full time instructors in coordinating course offerings and will take the lead in developing other Women's Studies courses and managing the student learning outcomes for these sections. Our department currently consists of three full time members that are strongly committed to serving "at risk" students, have well established connections with our students, work collaboratively with other departments and programs (i.e. Honors, Umoja and F.Y.E.) and are involved in campus leadership. 

Representative Duties

(E = essential job function) 

Duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

1. Provide instruction in one or more areas of the sociology program, primarily in the area of Women's Studies and other related courses. (E) 

2. Participate in typical departmental and faculty functions such as service on hiring committees, performance of faculty evaluations, collaboration with staff, and participation in department meetings. (E) 

3. Work in collaboration with other full-time instructors in Sociology in coordinating curriculum and mentoring associate faculty in these courses. (E) 

4. Maintain currency of curriculum for courses the individual teaches and develop new Women's Studies curricula in collaboration with other Sociology instructors as appropriate. (E) 

5. Participate in the development, assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes (SLOs). (E) 

6. Assist in recruiting students and promoting the Sociology department in general and the Women's Studies program specifically through participation in college-sponsored events, student clubs, and educational outreach. 

7. Participate in college-wide committee work and collegial governance. (E) 

8. Maintain currency in areas appropriate to the position. (E)

1. a Master's degree in sociology; OR 

2. a Bachelor's degree in sociology AND a Master's degree in anthropology, any ethnic studies, social work, or psychology; OR 

3. a valid California Community College teaching credential in the appropriate subject matter; OR

Desirable Qualifications

The college seeks candidates who have achieved the highest level of professional excellence as demonstrated by: 

1. Academic preparation in Women's Studies (or related) courses 

2. Experience teaching Women's Studies (or related) courses 

3. Demonstrated ability to develop curriculum 

4. Demonstrated interest in working with "at risk" students 

5. Demonstrated interest in working collaboratively with campus and/or community partners 

6. Demonstrated ability to teach online courses 

7. Demonstrated ability to work closely and collaboratively with students and colleagues in support of a positive, productive, and professional academic environment 

8. Commitment to the community college objective of providing lower division instruction for students of diverse abilities, interests, and cultural backgrounds
