Detailed Job Description
Responsible for server implementation, management and support in a complex environment providing the highest levels of availability, reliability, performance and service in support of Miami University's academic, research and business missions.
Perform Linux server operating system installations, decommissions, upgrades, configuration, monitoring, security and problem resolution.
Develop scripts and programs to automated processes, systems management and report operational statistics.
Create and maintain standardized Linux server images, configuration and inventory information.
Research, evaluate, and recommend software and hardware solutions which ensure high quality and cost effective operations.
Perform software management, configuration, debugging, upgrades and support for internal core applications.
Monitor and evaluate system capacity and operations to ensure optimal system performance.
Coordinate with network and other technical support services on network issues; diagnoses network related problems.
Work directly with vendors regarding problems and related issues, and configure hardware and software for resolution, as needed.
Provide tier III support for server operating systems and appropriate application software to other areas of IT Services and the university.
Support the installation of third party application software where appropriate.
Provide support for monitoring, maintaining and integrating servers and services.
Escalate issues appropriately.
Participate in establishment of systems standards to provide computing platforms that have high security, integrity and availability.
Perform server hardware diagnostics, repairs and upgrades.
Actively promote a service excellence approach throughout IT Services.
Support clients and end users as required.
Create accurate documentation and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Assist in purchase recommendations.
Research and recommend new technology.
Participate in professional development activities.
Participate in cross-functional projects.
Carry a mobile phone and maintain availability for on-call rotation.
Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required or assigned.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or Information Technology or related field earned by date of hire.
Minimum of 3 years experience in the systems administration, support, monitoring, and problem solving for Linux operating systems.
Minimum of 3 years experience diagnosing and performing server hardware repairs, remediation and upgrades.
Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience providing the knowledge/skills/abilities listed above may be substituted. Experience in these knowledge/skills/abilities may be earned concurrently.
3+ years experience with systems administration support and problem resolution on current flavors of Linux operating systems.
Demonstrated experience in the administration of a large number of physical and virtual Linux servers in a complex and heterogeneous environment.
Demonstrated experience installing, remediating and analyzing physical server hardware and peripherals.
Demonstrated knowledge of developing system utilities in appropriate coding languages including HTML, PERL, PHP, or appropriate development languages.
Demonstrated experience with the integration of storage environments with Linux server platforms.
Experience with asset management and vendor support agreements.
Ability to effectively work with incident and change management procedures.
Experience with server and workstation communication and integration in a heterogeneous, networked environment including Macintosh and Windows workstations, Ethernet and wireless networks.
Experience with VMware ESX, including physical to virtual server migrations.
Experience in the use of automated system monitoring and alerting.
Experience with Puppet, Linux server automation tool.
Experience with enterprise backup solutions.
Experience with TSM, Tivovi, Tape Backup solutions.
Ability to research and recommend infrastructure upgrades and improvements.
Experience with resources available to research technical information.
Experience with basic networking fundamentals including IP, TCP, DNS, DHCP, routing and firewalls.
Ability to work with customers and vendors with diplomacy.
