Detailed Job Description

This position is for an Academic Advisor in the College of Business at Metropolitan State University of Denver. This academic advising position reports to the Associate Dean of the College of Business and coordinates advising activities for the college with the University’s Academic Advising Center. The position will be responsible for academic advising for the College of Business freshmen, sophomores and transfer students. The position participates in group and individual presentations, faculty training both on and off campus and regularly interacts with the academic departments within the College of Business.

Duties/Responsibilities

The College of Business Advisor will be responsible for: Coordinating, planning and preparing for advising sessions; Maintaining confidential student files as well as documenting all advising sessions using Banner Relationship Management(BRM) or current advising record keeping system; Referring and/or informing students of University resources; Disseminating policy and procedural information to students, departments and other University units; Providing advising assistance and training as needed for College of Business faculty, including assisting faculty within Banner Relationship Management (BRM) or current advising record keeping software to ensure 100% of College of Business faculty use BRM; Working with University services for student retention initiatives; Participating in University recruitment and orientation and other University functions related to these efforts; Reviewing CoBUS and departmental websites to ensure they are updated in a timely manner, as well as maintaining and updating other online advising resources; Participating in advising training sessions and professional development opportunities whenever possible; Assisting with and evaluating transfer courses and submitting CAPP adjustments and initiating BASE (Board of Academic Standards Exceptions) petitions when applicable to ensure that all majors within the college have comparable evaluations of their previous coursework; Working with the Admissions office to identify newly admitted business majors and contacting them regarding orientation and advising; serve as College of Business liaison for University’s Veteran Student Support Services; Developing and managing advising program(s) for Veteran students; Participating on College of Business and/or University committees and task forces as needed.

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelors degree in Business related field
2. Experience using the SCT/Banner system or related student database system.
3. Experience working with veterans
4. Experience using a computer based advising system.
5. Current MSU Denver employee.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Three or more years of experience in developmental advising (or equivalent experience) at an accredited institution.
2. Experience working with diverse, urban and non-traditional student populations.
3. Degree or work experience with one of the six business college disciplines (ACC, CIS, ECO, FIN, MGT, MKT)
4. Experience advising at an AACSB accredited school or college of business.
5. At least 1 year of Banner experience.
6. Desire to develop Veteran specific programming.
