Detailed Job Description
The IT Technical Specialist IV performs advanced IT
activities for specialized, complex and/or functional areas requiring the
expert knowledge and professional application of IT principles, practices and
techniques in accordance with industry standards and university policy.
Requires a great amount of evaluation, originality or ingenuity. May be
responsible for training, assisting or supervising lower level IT personnel and
other staff. May lead projects and cross-functional activities.
Additional Department Summary:
The Networking & Systems Administrator provides
technical support to the Center for Advanced Public Safety (CAPS) within the
Department of Computer Science. Working under the supervision of the CAPS
Senior System Administrator this position will provide system administration,
networking and security experience and knowledge as part of a team assigned to
manage information technology for a cutting edge software research and
development organization on campus at The University of Alabama. The position
will be exposed to a wide variety of technologies, both experimental and
traditional, and will need to be able to adapt quickly to new technologies. The
Networking & Systems Administrator will primarily focus on administering
networking and security appliances within the CAPS environment with emphasis on
switches, routers, firewalls, web application firewalls, IDS/IPS systems,
anti-virus systems, and SIEMs.The
position will also assist in the evaluation of several projects including the
latest developments in networking, information security, and evaluation of
other advanced technologies under consideration within the CAPS organization.
The position requires staying up to date on security threats, adapting to
threats quickly, and conforming to organizational information security policies
job includes light manual work in the movement and installation of servers and
workstations and requires the ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and 3 years of professional
IT experience, OR Master's degree and 1 year of professional IT experience, OR
any equivalent combination of experience, training, education and/or
certification from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been
obtained. Knowledge of advanced programming, networking, system, multimedia,
instructional or security technology skills or knowledge of project management
methods and applications. May require advanced level training or certification.
and Knowledge:Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in
writing, with users of varying degrees of technical ability and understanding.
Effective time management skills and ability to work on multiple projects
Experience in Citrix desktop virtualization preferred.
Exposure to web application firewalls, IDS/IPS systems, antivirus systems, and
SIEMs. Professional certification in security and/or networking related areas,
security clearance, and demonstrated experience in security fields.
