The Department of Language Studies and the Arts is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, 12-month tenure track, position to serve as Graduate Program Director to coordinate the new MA-Creative Writing low-residency academic program with an optional thematic focus on writing for veterans and the study of war literature. This position is located at our main campus in Saint Leo, Florida.


This is a twelve (12) month, full-time administrative faculty appointment at the Assistant/ Associate rank.


This position is pending final budgetary approval for the 2015-2016 academic year.


Review of candidate materials begins immediately for anticipated start date of July or August 2015. To apply, submit letter of introduction documenting successful teaching and administrative experience; curriculum vitae; three letters of recommendation (all should be professional references and at least one from a recent superior); values statement (500 words or less) and teaching philosophy (500 words or less), which highlights how your teaching and administrative philosophy and practices fit the Mission and Values of Saint Leo University; official transcripts (including WES evaluation if from an international university); and student evaluations from the last year (at least six classes, preferably at the graduate level).


An exceptional candidate possessing an MFA or doctorate degree with experience may be considered at the Associate level.

Basic Function:

The faculty member will be required to:

  • Teach four classes per year;
  • Engage in curriculum development;
  • Support recruiting efforts;
  • Advise students;
  • Demonstrate professional development (publications);
  • Undertake community service in keeping with the school’s Benedictine values;
  • Teach on-ground, online; and
  • Teach in the graduate program.
  • Be able to teach traditional and non-traditional age students; and

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

Required qualifications: applicant must be a veteran writer with a Ph.D or MFA in creative writing; must have administrative experience and experience with writing conferences, writing workshops, and/or writing continuing education. Demonstrated potential for providing excellence in student service. Demonstrated successful managerial and leadership experience.
University-level teaching experience. A demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Minimum Qualifications:

Veteran writer with a Ph.D or MFA in creative writing; must have administrative experience and experience with writing conferences, writing workshops, and/or writing continuing education. Demonstrated potential for providing excellence in student service. Demonstrated successful managerial and leadership experience.
University-level teaching experience. A demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications include experience in low residency MFA programs.
