Detailed Job Description

Counsel with students and parents to develop an individualized strengths-based intake summary and education plan, and provide customized services based on that plan. Develop and implement activities and programs, based on the statewide GEAR UP grant, to assist students in successfully graduating high school, preparing for and attending college. Monitor academic progress, by tracking attendance and GPA, and provide feedback and assistance to students. Hire, train and supervise GEAR UP tutors.
Essential Functions, Major Duties, and/or Accountabilities:
-Counsel with students and parents to develop an individualized strengths-based intake summary and education plan, and provide customized services based on that plan.
-Meet with students, individually and in small groups, to provide academic counseling, financial-aid information, and college preparation training. Help students and parents understand the Common Core State Standards.
-Increase the academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education for GEAR UP students. Increase the rate of high school graduation and enrollment in postsecondary education for GEAR UP students.
-Monitor academic progress, provide feedback and assistance to students, track GPA and attendance.
-Hire, train, and supervise tutors who work as a team to assist the students in meeting their needs based on their individual plans.
-Regularly collect and submit student and cost-share data. Participate in program evaluation activities, including data gathering and administering surveys. 10%
-Organize college visits, career exploration, and leadership development opportunities for students. Provide college preparation, financial aid, and other workshops for students and parents. 10%
-Work to ensure that students are meeting performance indicators including GPA, attendance, math course completion, and FAFSA completion. 5%
-Increase GEAR UP students' and their families' knowledge of postsecondary education options, preparation, and funding. Increase GEAR UP students' success in their first year of attendance at an institution of higher education.
-Be very familiar with and meet the objectives of the statewide GEAR UP grant.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Science, or a related field and two years experience related to the summary of duties with at least one of those years counseling at-risk students.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

-Strong knowledge of low-income, minority, and at-risk high school and college student populations.
-Excellent skills in academic counseling, career guidance, high school student retention and graduation strategies, college-readiness strategies, scholarship awareness and first-generation college student preparation.
-Skill in academic and outreach program development. Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
-Effective interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and public-relations skills.
-Experience in rapport-building techniques.
-Ability to collaborate effectively with other personnel, partners, and external parties.
-Ability to create presentations and present them effectively and professionally to diverse audiences.
-Ability to receive feedback and implement changes as needed.
-Ability to work independently on a multi-task level and prioritize and follow projects and assignments through to completion in a timely manner.
-Ability to deal with diverse personalities and a high-stress environment.
-Skill in data tracking, record keeping, writing reports, and maintaining student and staff records.
-Ability to network with various student-sponsoring agencies and programs.
-Knowledge of high school, two-year college program, and traditional four-year college graduation requirements.
-Knowledge of educational and employment problems of special groups including low-income and at-risk youth, minorities, non-native English speakers, and those with learning or physical disabilities.
-Knowledge adolescent development.
-Knowledge of labor market characteristics and variety of occupations and industries.
-Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications.
