Job Summary

The Dean for the School of Arts & Sciences serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the School of Arts & Sciences and is a member of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Council. The position requires visionary leadership and teambuilding skills to oversee five (5) academic departments: History, Geography and Global Studies, Humanities, Mathematics and Computer Science, Natural Sciences, & Visual & Performing Arts.


  • The dean is responsible for academic leadership of the school in its efforts to recruit, retain, and evaluate a diverse and distinguished faculty, and promote their professional development.

  • Provide high quality instructional programs.

  • Increase, support and promote scholarly and creative activity.

  • Carry out academic activities of the departments and schools.
  • Certify candidates for graduation.

  • Promote collaborative relationships with the community and professions.

  • Initiate and support the college’s fund-raising and development activities.

  • Other administrative duties include developing and maintaining productive relationships with the community, alumni and associated boards and constituency.

    Minimum Qualifications


    • An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in one of the disciplines associated with the school’s academic units.


    • 5 years of progressive administrative experience in the development and management of undergraduate and graduate programs.

    • Experiences associated with academic programs in the Arts and Science
    • Experience in the management and coordination of academic programs.
    • Proven experience with managing and facilitating the NCATE accreditation process (preferred).

    • Experience providing oversight to grant-funded projects in higher education(preferred).

    • Demonstrated experiences with bridging public education and higher
    • Successful record of administrative collaboration with faculty, staff and students.
    • Demonstrate a successful record of fundraising and/or external grant-supported funding.

    • Provide evidence of a distinguished record of applied teaching, research, service and integration of technology.

    • Provide evidence of creativity and innovation in strategic planning and organizational development.

    • Experience with regional and professional accreditation including collaborative work with a School of Arts & Sciences accrediting processes.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • The candidate must have demonstrated effective leadership skills.

    • Record of leading and developing programs for students from urban schools and communities.

    • Substantial record of scholarship activities as evidenced by a peer-reviewed publication history.

    • Proven service to the education profession as evidenced by leadership positions with state and national education organizations experience in education-related fundraising and grant-funding.

    • Demonstrated successful experiences with recruitment/retention.
