Detailed Job Description

The Division of Advancement and External Relations leverages the resources of Metropolitan State College of Denver to benefit the urban communities of Colorado and develops innovative partnerships and resources to benefit the institution and the surrounding community. The director of External Relations is responsible for cultivating beneficial relationships and alliances with business, government, non-profit and other civic leaders in order to strengthen Metro State's place in the community.

Additionally, the director provides leadership for the Center for Urban Connections (CUC) and provides strategic vision, supervises the staff, and disseminates information for the AmeriCorps programs (Compact Service Corps and UCAN serve) and oversees Metro State's efforts to enhance student learning through substantial civic and community engagement. The director also provides advice and resources for faculty and staff seeking board appointments with area non-profit agencies. The director provides leadership in strategic planning, program benchmarking, evaluation and assessment, fundraising and grant-writing efforts in support of the outreach mission of the College, and provides day-to-day management for the supervised areas. Internally, the director must maintain effective and collaborative relationships with related faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and students. In particular, the position collaborates with the leadership of the Centers for Applied Learning and Urban education.

The director of external relations will work collaboratively with the Marketing and Communications department to position Metro State in the greater Denver community, but is not responsible for day-to-day public relations and communications duties.
Specific duties This position is responsible for cultivating the College's engagement with key community partners. The position is responsible for:

Representing the College in developing and sustaining off-campus community partners.

Gathering data on future workforce needs of employers to benefit curricular efforts to train workers of the future.

Developing and implementing assessment metrics for Advancement and External Relations efforts.

Creating and tracking benchmark data on the perception of Metro State among key external constituencies.

Develop and monitor a proactive plan to solicit federal and state support for Metro State programs (in cooperation with legislative relations contract staff).

Advocating for service learning and community-based learning experiences.

Oversight of assessment, evaluation, and annual reports of the Center for Urban Connections.

Facilitating continued collaboration with faculty and staff across campus in active engagement initiatives (specifically though the Applied Learning Center).

Providing strategic vision and supervising the staff in the AmeriCorps programs (Compact Service Corps and UCAN Serve).

Providing advice and resources for faculty and staff seeking board appointments with metropolitan Denver.

Providing financial oversight for supervised areas.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with emphasis in leadership, business, social science or other studies related to the job responsibilities.

Minimum of 5 years of full-time, professional experience in external affairs.

Demonstrated success in program development, evaluation and assessment.

Demonstrated ability to gather, analyze and utilized qualitative and quantitative data to support the strategic direction of the college's external efforts.

Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of people and organizations including academic personnel, community leaders, government officials, and students.

Proven familiarity with non-profit organizations (including board of director involvement) in the Denver and surrounding communities.

Demonstrated understanding of the mission and values of Metro State College.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to take initiative, think creatively, and balance multiple priorities.

Experience with grant writing and fundraising.

Preferred Qualifications

5-7 years of full-time, professional experience with community-based service learning, program evaluation and implementation, and programs in volunteer management.

Master's Degree in related field.

Experience working in the higher education environment.

Significant work with gathering and analyzing data to support a strategic direction and/or benchmarking and comparative efforts.

Demonstrated ability to foster strong ties to the local community.

Successful record in grant writing and fund raising.

Membership on board of directors with non-profit community organization(s).
