Detailed Job Description

Oakland University, a doctoral research university, seeks an energetic leader who fosters innovation and collaboration to serve as Dean of University Libraries at a vibrant, growing institution. The ideal candidate will continue the Libraries’ strong momentum of integrating teaching, information, and technology to create dynamic, welcoming learning environments. Recent enhancements to the Libraries—including the launch of an institutional repository and the expansion of its credit-bearing information literacy course—underscore this exciting opportunity to broaden the Libraries' role as a central pillar upon which the University can advance its educational, research, and public-service goals.

The Dean provides vision and leadership in all aspects of library administration and is responsible for developing strong collaborative relationships within the university and surrounding communities, fostering the professional growth and development of library faculty and staff, and integrating the Libraries into the intellectual life of the university. Oakland University librarians have faculty status, and the successful candidate will have a record of academic and professional achievement that warrants tenure at a senior academic rank. This position reports to the Provost and Senior Vice-President for Academic Affairs and serves on the Deans Council and other leadership teams.

  • Facilitate administration and leadership for all aspects of library operations and long-range strategic planning.
  • Advance strong collaborative relationships with the Provost, academic deans and other administrative leaders to advocate for the Libraries' role within the university.
  • Advocate for the Libraries' burgeoning role in emerging scholarly communication initiatives to promote sustainability, preservation and access, and to support the breadth of the university's research activities.
  • Guide the continued development of the Libraries’ collections and academic offerings.
  • Foster a library-wide collegial and collaborative environment, which includes the School of Medicine Library.
  • Cultivate relationships with external fundraising sources.
  • Represent the Libraries to local and national communities and foster a strong commitment to local community engagement.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in library science or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Minimum of five years of successful and progressively responsible administrative experience in academic libraries, including budget management.
  • Clear vision of the academic library as a dynamic, technologically innovative center of research, teaching and learning, and a demonstrated commitment to the creation of a vibrant and visible student-centered library.
  • Experience addressing scholarly communication issues and trends with campus constituents.
  • Experience with current and emerging library technologies including discovery services, digital repositories and other digital assets.
  • Record of scholarship, research, professional participation and/or equivalent activities warranting tenure at the rank of associate professor or professor.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize among competing interests in the context of fiscally sound financial management.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Second master’s degree or earned doctorate.
  • Evidence of continued scholarly growth.
  • Experience developing and implementing a strategic plan.
  • Experience with e-learning technology resources and online education.
  • Experience with a collective bargaining environment and faculty status for librarians.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to equity, diversity and professional development of library personnel.
  • Record of developing or cultivating external fundraising sources for resource enrichment in a university setting.
