SUMMARY: As a key member of the Student Persistence leadership team, the Director of SSS assists the Director of Persistence by overseeing the SSS grant. This position is responsible for overseeing the development, administration and implementation of the SSS program, including supervision and oversight of professional staff, budget management, project evaluation, relations with the Department of Education and all other administrative functions associated with the program. This position will also participate in various activities designed to support strategic retention and persistence initiatives for Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver). This position is currently grant funded through August 30, 2015 (There is one year of funding left of the 5 year grant cycle). Currently the grant is being written and will be submitted for continued funding for the next five year grant cycle.
25% Grant Oversight: The Director oversees all administrative aspects of the SSS Program to ensure the SSS program is in full compliance with the Higher Education Act, all amendments and all applicable federal regulations, including EDGAR and OMB circulars. The position prepares an annual performance report for the Department of Education (DoE) and written reports for other stakeholders as requested regarding utilization of the grant. This position ensures the program achieves objectives as defined by the DoE. The position provides long-range strategic planning, establishes changes to program systems, and implements programmatic improvements to optimize services for participants and to meet program goals and institutional priorities.
20% Academic Support Programming and Services for Students: The position is responsible for overseeing the selection of program participants, which includes creating and maintaining an effective system of admission, orientation, tracking and monitoring participants’ academic progress and service records in accordance with federal regulations. This position oversees program development and manages comprehensive services designed to assist participants with tutoring, academic advising, academic skill building, assistance securing financial aid, career planning, graduate school preparation, life skills and resource referral. This position develops new and innovative programming to recognize student achievement and to support students in developing cultural awareness and financial literacy skills in accordance with federal regulations. This position also manages the computer lab and program reception area.
20% Supervision of Professional and Student Staff: This position will hire, train, and supervise three full-time professional staff (Mathematics Learning Specialist, Academic Learning Specialist, and an Administrative Assistant) and oversee fifteen student staff (certified peer mentor/tutors and office assistants). This position is responsible for developing performance goals, setting expectations, supervising and conducting evaluation of staff performance. The position leads staff meetings and planning sessions and coordinates professional development opportunities for staff.
15% Budget Oversight: This position manages a multi-year federal grant award, an indirect cost recovery account, and supplemental scholarship funds. This position plans and administers the budget, monitors fiscal records, and makes expenditures in accordance with institutional, state and federal guidelines. Oversees purchasing and reconciliation of transactions posted to the university Banner finance system, and submits budget reports to Director of Student Persistence. This position also oversees awarding of supplemental scholarship funds to eligible participants. This process includes: negotiating with donors for allocation of funds; designing and implementing an application, selection and notification process for participants; and ensuring compliance with guidelines set by the donor, the Auraria Foundation and the MSU Denver Financial Aid Office.
10% Manage Data and Assessment: This position will manage student files and a database system to ensure tracking of participant progress as required by federal agencies which includes the following: training staff to collect and manage student data, perform data entry processes and procedures, utilize the database to track individual participation and monitor academic progress, import data from the university Banner student information system, run queries and export data for reports. This position compiles, analyzes and submits data summaries as requested by the Director of Student Persistence to assist with evaluations of program effectiveness and university reports. This position also conducts on-going evaluation and assessment of student learning outcomes and oversees assessment of program activities which involves developing and administering instruments to gather, analyze, and interpret relevant data and make program changes based on assessment results.
5% Management of Retention Technology: The position will be responsible for the following: selecting and evaluating academic support related online vendors/services; managing a 12 work-station computer lab; managing the program website and a customized database. Online services to students include a series of financial literacy courses, a Learning Assessment and Study Skills Inventory (LASSI), and Accuplacer/My Foundations Lab.
5% Other Duties as Assigned: One hundred percent of this position is contingent on continued grant funding; salary is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Education TRiO grant program.
•A Master’s degree is required.
•A minimum of 1 year of experience working with Federal Trio programs that involves providing academic and retention support for the Student Support Services population.
•At least five years of professional experience in higher education providing academic advising, teaching, student services, undergraduate/graduate financial aid application, graduate school planning, and/or career exploration.
•Experience developing campus and community partnerships to provide additional resources to students.
•At least one year of experience working with a diverse, underrepresented population, including students of color as well as traditional and non-traditional students.
•At least two years of experience using Microsoft Office and database systems.
•Experience with grant writing.
•Experience following federal and state regulations and procedures for fiscal management, purchasing, and reporting.
•At least one year of experience supervising professional staff and/or student staff.
•At least two years of program development and assessment.
•Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills required.
•Minimum two years’ experience in an administrative capacity with responsibility for supervising staff, project management, budgeting, and report generation.
•The individual will also have experienced overcoming academic barriers as a low-income, first-generation, and/or disabled student.
•Experience working in collaboration with administrators, faculty, staff and students in a higher education environment.
•Preference for those with similar challenges and background as population to be served.
•Must have excellent public speaking/presentation skills; organizational and time management skills; the ability to diffuse stressful situations before a crisis.
•Experience working under the regulations of a federal grant and maintaining grant compliance
•Knowledge of student development theories and current persistence best practices.
