Detailed Job Description

This position will report to the Dean of Humanities and will provide 15 credit hours of instruction per semester with a primary teaching load in Student Success courses.

Duties & Responsibilities

Course load will include but not be limited to: Student Success courses that incorporate active student learning and college-wide efforts to improve student retention and success through innovative pedagogy and campus-wide initiatives that works effectively and collegially with faculty and staff across disciplines/programs. The successful candidate may be required to teach evening, hybrid or distance education, and dual credit courses and will actively participate in the assessment of course and program level student learning outcomes. Responsibilities include service on various college and department committees, maintenance of office hours, and other duties as assigned by the Dean. Classroom locations may vary to include: SJC Main Campus, SJC East Campus, and SJC West Campus. Responsibilities include maintenance of 5 office hours per week, develop and design curriculum in assorted modes of delivery such as face to face, online, accelerated courses, and learning communities, research and participate in professional development activities to stay current in the area of Student Success, interact and collaborate with colleagues to review and develop best practices for teaching, advisement, service to college through serving on and/or chairing committees, faculty sponsor student clubs and organizations, mentor new and adjunct faculty, and other duties as assigned by the Dean of the School of Humanities.


Master’s Degree in Adult Education, Education, Counseling, Student Services, English, Communication or other related field is required. Two years educational/teaching experience is required. Successful teaching experience at the community college/post secondary level is highly desirable. Previous experience where mandated college success courses or programs were an institutional priority and demonstrated involvement and experience with innovative teaching, assessment and evidence-based decision- making are preferred. The successful candidate will be a dynamic teacher with a strong commitment to the community college experience and learning college philosophy. The candidate will also value diversity and have the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse student population. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong organizational ability. Must be a self-starter who works well in a dynamic, team-oriented, and culturally diverse learning environment.

Starting Salary

Commensurate with highest level of education and actual years teaching experience.
