Provides personal advising and mentoring to low-income or first generation middle and high school students. Track and record student achievement and provide learning opportunities to students and parents in college readiness, educational and career planning and financial aid planning to ensure that students make consistent progression in their educational programs and achieve their career and educational goals. Provides support to mentors and donors.
Primary Work Location
1. Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in psychology, education, sociology, or related field or equivalent experience in writing, donor/constituent stewardship, database management and event management. 2. Experience with constituent relations and developmental advising. 3. Experience working with students in an educational setting preferably in a comprehensive community college. 4. Essential Job Functions
1. Personal advisor for assigned middle and high school students. Assists students in building college-readiness skills and with identifying and selecting appropriate courses for their career path, explaining requirements for high school graduation and college level degrees and certifications. 2. Visit assigned area middle and high schools to meet individually with students to help with tracking academic and behavioral success. Student, parent, teacher conference liaison. 3. Record and input student data and track student achievement. 4. Conduct student workshops and provide support for other workshops or community events that serve the student population assigned under this program. 5. Obtain document and report success data on assigned students as related to intervention strategies. 6. Participate in college, state, and regional staff development activities and meetings to enhance understanding of the population served. 7. Work with Orange County Public School and Valencia staff in identifying barriers to learning and recommends approaches to overcome barriers to enhance student success. 8. Provides developmental advising to students in individual and group settings, including discussions of life and educational goals, educational planning, review of entry assessment information. 9. Provides students with in-depth college information and policy interpretation relevant to their academic progress (i.e. graduation requirements, transfer information, counselors, etc.). 10. Refers students to appropriate resources to support their academic success (i.e. financial aid, career center, tutoring center and student development programs, etc.). 11. Provides advising support for specific populations and programs. 12. Facilitates development of educational plan for probation students using developmental advising in order to adhere to Take Stock in Children policy. 13. Manage database and create all student and mentor profiles. 14. Responsible for providing advanced and complex clerical, secretarial, and general support to management. Exercises initiative, independent judgment and discretion in carrying out assignments. 15. Supports management in clerical activities and administrative decisions. Performs office management functions and coordination. Acts as liaison between management and staff in the department. 16. Assembles data and prepares reports on a routine or non-routine basis. 17.. Researches and provides information on issues affecting students, staff and/or the department. 18. Opens, organizes, and screens mail. 19. Composes and prepares routine and non-routine correspondence for supervisor's signature. 20. Answers telephone, screens and refers calls, takes messages. 21. Maintains calendar and makes travel arrangements. 22. Schedules/reserves boardrooms and prepares for meetings as directed. 23. Establishes filing systems and maintains current files for the department, including files for internal and external correspondence. 24. Maintains departmental budget reports and related documentation. Prepares requisitions for supplies and materials. 25. Operates and conducts training on standard office equipment as needed to perform tasks. 26. Plans, researches, initiates, and carries out to completion recurring or special assignments. 27. Takes minutes of meetings, prepares confidential documents and follows up to ensure timely reply and action. 28. Maintains control on action documents and follows up to ensure timely reply and action. 29. Accesses, inputs, and retrieves information from a computer. 30. Establishes and maintains excellent working relationships with individuals at all levels within the college and the community. 31. Serves as first point of contact for all scholarship inquiries. 32. Performs all other duties as assigned.
