The Front-end Web Designer is a key member of the Brand Marketing and Creative team responsible for developing and implementing innovative, technology-based solutions to communications challenges in support of the University’s strategic plan and marketing goals. Reporting to the Web Systems Manager, the Front-end Web Designer designs, builds and implements new website layouts and applications; integrates new website designs with back-end applications; and performs day-to-day fixes and updates to the organization’s Web content management system.
75% Front-end web design:
*Create new art, content as well as re-purpose and optimize existing content for Web using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, and other industry standard content applications
• Participate in setting organizational Web development strategy.
•Develop and communicate best practice and utilization of Web tools to University Web authors.
•Define site architecture for departments and offices.
•Conduct research into current and emerging Web technologies and issues in support of Web development efforts.
•Identify, recommend and prioritize new Web features and applications.
•Diagnose and troubleshoot problems with existing Web applications and sites.
•Perform periodic website technology audits focused on best practices, browser testing, usability and accessibility using the most common web browsers including but not limited to Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, Firefox
•Ensure client input and change requests are followed and completed. Communicate to the client the impact the requested changes will have on project timelines.
•Analyze project requirements and proposes solutions utilizing standardized design methodologies.
•Create design documents, mock-ups and proof of concept systems as necessary.
•Meet Web production schedules.
•Participate in project status meetings and report on project status.
15% Web services:
•Update content, sites, pages, micro-sites, navigation, and page layout to adhere to the University design and identity standards.
•Day-to-day maintenance of university websites.
•Work to ensure that project deadlines are met; communicate any adjustment to production schedule, including deliverable date, as a result of missed deadlines
10% Systems administration:
•Serves in systems administration capacity in absence of Web Systems Manager.
•Communicate critical information to relevant parties in a timely manner. Keep the flow of information open, honest and transparent.
Please note that two years of experience is equivalent to one year of education.
Preferred qualifications include: four or more years of professional experience with front-end web user experience design (UX); intermediate to advanced graphic design skills; experience writing and/or editing for the Web; an advanced degree in marketing, graphic design, technical communications, or similar area; experience in HTML5 canvas and scripting; experience in CSS4; experience in Web programming languages such as PHP, and Java, other; basic knowledge of video editing and streaming, experience with SEO best practices, familiarity withSVN and/or Git. Experience in Adobe InDesign and Adobe Creative suite of products a plus. Ability to work in a fast-paced, open-office, product-focused team environment involving technical and non-technical individuals. Ability to prioritize, multi-task and handle multiple projects on an ongoing basis while managing changing priorities; demonstrate a keen attention to detail; and be able to align, develop and execute projects in an organized and timely manner.
