Detailed Job Description

The Associate Vice President for Curriculum and Academic Effectiveness provides support, oversight and leadership on behalf of the Provost, President, Board of Trustees, and Colorado Department of Higher Education in the areas of curriculum; academic policy development and implementation; academic program assessment; academic program and student services unit review; accreditation and accountability; and federal compliance for human subjects protection program. This position works with college and school deans, faculty, staff, university administrators and external entities to develop, improve and maintain high-quality curriculum, academic policies and programs, and serves as the Provost’s designee on standing and ad hoc committees. This position also works with the Provost and other Academic and Student Affairs personnel to prepare agenda items and reports for the Board of Trustees. This position reports directly to the Provost and Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs. Positions that report to the AVP for Curriculum and Academic Effectiveness include Curriculum and Academic Policy Coordinator, Academic Effectiveness Program Coordinator, Human Subjects Protection Program Manager, Chair of the Graduate Council, and Center for Faculty Development Director. The position begins as soon as possible after the conclusion of the search.


25% Curriculum—Provide leadership and consultation with AVPs, deans, faculty and functional area staff regarding curriculum development, review, implementation, and compliance for undergraduate and graduate programs; this includes exploring and leading innovation in curricular delivery, approval process, and implementation while complying with federal, state, and external accreditation rules and regulations. Oversee publication of undergraduate and graduate catalogs. Prepare curriculum materials for presentation to the Board of Trustees, Colorado Department of Higher Education, and Higher Learning Commission for review and approval. Represent MSU Denver’s interests as a member of Colorado Department of Higher Education General Education Council, and participate in state initiatives such as gtPathways guaranteed transfer courses and statewide transfer articulation agreements. Work with Enrollment Services, Academic Advising, and other areas to monitor compliance with university, state, regional, and federal curriculum policies.

25% Academic Effectiveness—Guide and monitor the development and assessment of student learning outcomes in all academic and student support services programs in collaboration with faculty, staff, and administrative personnel. Assist the university in retention and completion efforts including but not limited to First Year Success, Supplemental Academic Instruction, Equity in Excellence and other initiatives targeting underrepresented student populations. Compile and submit assessment and accountability documentation for internal and external entities, as required. Oversee program review for academic and student service support units, including coordination of relevant committees, policies and guidelines. Provide guidance for the Center for Faculty Development director in establishing and maintaining programming that supports academic effectiveness in alignment with the university strategic plan.

15% Human Subjects Protection Program—Serve as Institutional Federalwide Assurance Officer for the Protection of Human Subjects. Oversee the Human Subjects Protection Program, its integration into university culture, and its coordination with the Office of Sponsored Research and Programs, Office of Institutional Research, Office of the Registrar, and other internal and external entities in order to maintain compliance with federal regulations. Facilitate appropriate staffing and professional development for the Institutional Review Board.

15% Academic Policy—Collaborate with faculty and other university personnel and governing bodies to develop and implement academic policies in accordance with the university’s policy management system.

15% Accreditation Liaison—Serve as institutional liaison for Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and oversee the university’s regional accreditation efforts. Collaborate with and provide consulting support for academic and student services unit seeking or continuing specialized accreditation.

5% Other Duties as Assigned—Provide additional leadership, oversight and support as need to maintain the integrity and functioning of Academic and Student Affairs.

Required Qualifications

Terminal degree from an accredited institution.

Credentials to qualify for tenure and Associate or Full Professor rank at MSU Denver.

Three to five (3-5) years of increasingly higher levels of administrative and supervisory experience.

Experience in curriculum development at the post-secondary level.

Experience in assessment and evaluation of academic and/or student services units.

Well-developed written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with state, regional, and/or federal curriculum policies

Demonstrated leadership skills including the ability to lead and manage large, complex projects

Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively and productively with others in stressful circumstances

Experience with humans subjects protection or other federally-required research compliance programs.

Experience with regional accreditation for four-year and graduate institutions.

Well-developed oral communication skills.
