Assistant Professor of Music, Full Time Tenure-Track, Jazz and American Improvised Music

Duties/Responsibilities

Teach a 12 hour load per semester. Teach in a variety of areas within the Jazz and American Improvised Music concentration as related to candidate’s background and experience. Teaching areas may include studio instruction on candidate’s primary instrument, directing and/or composing for jazz ensembles and combos, and other courses as appropriate. Maintain national visibility as a jazz performer and/or composer, and national visibility as a teacher. Work in partnership with faculty colleagues to recruit and retain students. Advise students, participate in scholarly professional activities, and perform department, university and community service. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

ABD”; or Master’s Degree plus significant local recognition as a performer and/or composer.

Preferred Qualifications

Successful college teaching experience. Demonstrable knowledge of major bands, composers, performers, recordings, and teaching methods in Jazz and American improvised music from the 1900s to the present. The successful candidate must have the ability to work with, and be sensitive to, the needs of a diverse urban population. The University is particularly interested in applicants who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for under-represented groups.
