Quinnipiac University invities applications for the position of Engineering Laboratory Technician to supervise, maintain, and ensure the safe operation of all equipment supporting the Engineering department’s courses and research initiatives. This includes a machine shop as well as laboratories supporting Civil, Industrial, Mechanical, and Software Engineering.
The Department of Engineering is in the second year at Quinnipiac University with the goal of becoming ABET accredited upon graduation of the first class in 2016. Plan, organize, and direct the laboratory operations.
Ensure safe operation of machine shop and lab equipment.
Ensure maintenance of all shop and laboratory equipment.
Ensure equipment calibration is performed as needed.
Ensure that safety and maintenance standards and procedures are established and followed.
Maintain all MSDS Sheets and other required documentation.
Determine methods and techniques for maintenance and repair of department equipment as well as initial installation.
Establish and present machine shop and lab equipment safety training / briefing programs for students and faculty.
Establish training programs for shop personnel, ensuring personnel maintain state-of-the-art expertise in designated areas.
Assist faculty in the development of teaching materials for laboratories.
Assist faculty in the design of safe classroom, demonstration, and experimental laboratories.
Provide technical advice and assistance to students and faculty including selection of proper instrumentation, construction, testing, and operation of systems.
Plan, design, build, and test complex mechanical mechanisms and machines used in demonstrating and instructing advanced engineering theory in both the classroom and in the laboratories.
Assist department in the development of new laboratory facilities and equipment selection.
Maintain all necessary records and maintenance documentation in support of shop operations.
Manage inventory of laboratory supplies.
Maintain contact with vendors of all equipment and supplies.
Five or more years of direct operational experience with machine shop equipment, including manual mills, lathes and other common shop equipment.
Experience with developing and leading programs to train individuals in the safe and effective use of equipment, especially shop equipment.
3-5 years of experience in a supervisory capacity, or a clear demonstration of this potential.
Formal teaching experience is desirable.
Experience programming and operating CNC mills and lathes is desirable.
Experience in PLC programming, simple robotics languages, and industrial automation is desirable.
