The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is a Resident Lecturer position with a one year annually renewable contract and the possibility of reappointment contingent upon satisfactory job performance and the availability of funding. The Lecturer teaches 15 credit hours a semester plus departmental and university service assignments.
Graduation from an accredited institution with terminal, earned degree appropriate to discipline. ABD accepted. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. See preferred qualifications for discipline or program-specific minimum qualifications.
Knowledge of grammar, reading, writing, and listening/speaking teaching strategies and methods.
Knowledge of teaching ESL students from basic to advanced level.
Record of on-going professional development.
Knowledge in developing ESL course/curriculum and outcomes materials.
Excellence in teaching a variety of ESL courses, levels and skills.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Native English speaker or near-native fluency in English.
Skill in cross-cultural sensitivity.
Strong classroom management skills, organizational and planning skills, creativity, and the ability to give clear concise directions and explanations.
Skill in developing effective teaching in various learning environments (e.g. face-to-face, technology-mediated classrooms, hybrid, online).
Proficiency in a second language.
Ability to give clear grammar explanations.
Ability to teach all levels (beginner – advanced).
Ability to teach all course periods.
Ability to work within and meet program administrative deadlines The ability to work well with diverse colleagues.
Ability to integrate second language acquisition trends and basic skills to prepare students for further education, workforce and community involvement.
