Position Description: The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health seeks a Director for the newly-established Lerner Center for Public Health Promotion, housed within the Department of Health, Behavior and Society. The Center will focus on action-based, communications-focused solutions in public health, drawing on the expertise across the Johns Hopkins University system and our domestic and international partners.
The Center will take an interdisciplinary and action-oriented approach to current public health challenges, integrating knowledge and activities with other areas of the University, as well as media, policy, and advocacy experts. A major focus of the Center will be the identification, development, evaluation, and promotion of key public health communication initiatives through a variety of channels, including traditional and social media, entertainment education, and others. The Center will lead training programs for graduate students as well as faculty members, with the aim of bringing marketing and communications tools and strategies into the service of current and future public health leaders.
As the recipient of the endowed Lerner Professorship of Public Health Promotion, the Director will lead a team of interdisciplinary experts in establishing and accomplishing an agenda of health promotion activities on a local, regional, and national level. The Director will also oversee training programs for graduate students and faculty, as well as teaching graduate-level courses and participating in service activities at the department and university levels. The Director will work with an External Advisory Board to broadly define the focus of the Center, and will collaborate with related programs at other universities.
Qualifications: A Doctoral degree in sociology, psychology, anthropology, communication, health education, public health, medicine, nursing, or related discipline is required. Preference is given to applicants with strong record of research (including substantial and sustained receipt of competitive funding and publication experience) as well as a demonstrated ability to teach in a public health academic setting. We are committed to collaborative, transdisciplinary work. Areas of research may relate to health communication strategies and interventions, traditional and new media, message design and framing, risk communication, social marketing, dissemination of evidence-based programs and policies, and/or health promotion program design, implementation and evaluation. All applicants would be expected to demonstrate the ability to work with diverse populations and multicultural perspectives. Experience relating to public policy, advocacy, and communications is also required. Applicants should demonstrate experience with mentoring junior colleagues, as well as a national or international reputation of scholarly leadership. The ability to teach courses in advanced behavioral and social science theory and research methods is highly desirable. Experience with community based research and intervention studies and evaluation is a strong plus.
