The Child Development Center at West Valley College is seeking a talented individual to fill the position of Child Development Center Specialist III.

West Valley College, though just minutes from the heart of the Silicon Valley, is in a beautiful park-like setting on 143 wooded acres. Our staff and faculty are among the most qualified in the state and our students appreciate the college for its friendly staff and supportive atmosphere.

Under direction of the Child Development Center (CDC) Instructor, the CDC Specialist III plans and implements a developmentally appropriate, emergent play-based curriculum for a multi-aged preschool group. Specialist III’s meet the individual needs of each child within the context of the group experience while providing a rich and varied learning environment and curriculum including full compliance with the State Department of Education, Child Development Division Funding Terms and conditions, Title 5 regulations and Title 22 Community Care Licensing regulations.

This classification is distinguished from the Specialist I and Specialist II in that the Specialist III functions as a team leader and provides leadership and support for the staff assigned to the respective classroom. The Specialist III facilitates communication between CDC instructor, other staff, and parents enrolled in the program.

Assignment

53.3% of full time, 20 hours per week, 10 months per year, with anticipated start date after July 15, 2014. Schedule may change to include some evening or weekend hours, as needed. This position is a member of the West Valley-Mission Classified Employees Association (WVMCEA), Office, Technical & Business Services Employee Unit.

Work Location: West Valley College, Saratoga, CA.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Education – Possess one of the following:

  • 24 college semester units of ECE/CD including core courses AND 16 general education semester units AND 6 specialization semester units AND 2 adult supervision semester units AND 3 semester units in supervision and administration; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher with 12 units of ECE, plus 3 units supervised field experience in ECE setting; OR
  • CTC Master Teacher or higher level permit;

AND

2. Experience – At least 350 days of 3+ hours per day within the last 4 years;

AND

3. Demonstrated ability to effectively work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Techniques and methods used in planning and implementing an early care and education program for young children.
  • Theories and research of child development.
  • Basic principles of early childhood.
  • Developmentally appropriate practices which foster the physical, cognitive, and socioemotional growth of the child.
  • Core curriculum components including blocks, socio-dramatic play, art, construction of loose parts, life cycles and nature, language, literacy, science, mathematics and movement.

  • Plan and implement a developmentally appropriate emergent play-based curriculum. Carry out the curriculum in an aesthetic environment with integrated curriculum areas that the daily flow and routines allow for the optimum use of both the indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Interact daily with each child and his or her learning processes including dialogues and conversations with the child, assisting the child in developing problem solving skills, supporting a child’s movement towards competency and modeling prosocial behaviors for the child. Contribute to the child’s social-emotional development.
  • Assist parent and child with the separation process by providing physical and emotional support for both of them.
  • Provide direct support, engagement, and extension of a child’s play and learning experiences by offering assistance, providing additional materials or resources, and creating opportunities for safe risks.
  • Establish a climate of respect for each child’s individual personality, physical characteristics and traits, culture, language and ethnic characteristics, family structure, developmental needs, and behaviors.
  • Establish and maintain a positive relationship with each child’s parent(s) and/or caregiver.
  • Converse regularly with parents or caregivers regarding their child’s development and program experiences.
  • Respond sensitively to racial and/or ethnic cultural values, behavior and diversity.
  • Maintain developmental profiles of each child which describes the overall growth and development in the areas of social, emotional, physical, creative, and cognitive.
  • Conduct parent-teacher conferences once a semester.
  • Coordinate regular meetings with Specialist I’s and Specialist II’s.
  • Coordinate daily schedules and work assignments of staff and students to effectively meet the demands of the day.
  • Foster positive working relationships and learning environment for staff and students with formal and informal discussions, written communications, conversations about children’s behavior and development, and program practice.
  • Maintain a safe, orderly classroom including adjacent indoor and outdoor areas; reporting safety hazards and injuries which occur in the center.
  • Follow health and safety standards for food handling, toileting of young children, hand washing, universal precautions with exposure to blood.
  • Stock classroom with necessary supplies and food which may include participating in the necessary inventory, ordering and purchasing tasks.
  • Attend meetings and participate in Department and/or College functions.
  • Maintain accurate records including daily attendance forms, time sheets, food/menu report forms.
  • Fully comply with State Department of Education, Child Development Division funding terms and Conditions, Title 5 regulations and Title 22 Community Care Licensing regulations.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Salary and Benefits

  • Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,391–$3,687 (monthly) with a maximum earnable monthly, excluding longevity and educational growth, of $4,425.
