Detailed Job Description

The police officer, with moderate supervision, performs law enforcement duties and provides services that enable the University of Alabama to achieve its mission. Duties and responsibilities include responding to calls for service; performing preventive patrol; meeting with complainants/victims, completing incident/offense reports and conducting preliminary investigations; investigating vehicular/pedestrian accidents and completing required reports; testifying in court on criminal, traffic and/or civil matters; operating radio and emergency equipment in accordance with established departmental procedures; conducting security checks of facilities and grounds; directing traffic; attending in-service and specialized training; and performing any other task necessary for the University to accomplish its mission.

Required Minimum Qualifications

High school degree or equivalent. Successful passage of physical agility and physical ability examinations, officer review panel, and the written examination for law enforcement officers. U.S. Citizenship. If the applicant has been a member of the armed forces of the United States, discharge from service must be honorable. Valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age and have an acceptable motor vehicle report as determined by the insurance carrier. Post-hire, this position must successfully complete the recruit orientation training, the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission's (APOSTC) minimum standards academy within 6 months of date of employment and the University of Alabama Police Department's (UAPD) field training and evaluation program. After completion of these phases, the position has a 1040-hour probationary period of field assignment duty. The required Police Officer's exam is scheduled for December 16, 2014 at 1pm in HM Comer room 126.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications:

Written Test, Physical, and Psychological Test Valid U.S.driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age and have an acceptable motor vehicle report as determined by the insurance carrier. Final candidate must submit to and successfully pass a post offer drug test.

Prior to hiring, the final candidate(s) must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation. A prior conviction reported as a result of the background investigation DOES NOT automatically disqualify a candidate from consideration for this position. A candidate with a prior conviction will receive an individualized review of the prior conviction before a hiring decision is made. EOE/AA
