Designs and teaches four courses per semester (teaching assignments will be composition courses and creative writing or literature courses as departmental circumstances require). Demonstrates proven knowledge of and experience in teaching these courses. Plans, prepares and follows an approved course of study with measurable objectives for each course taught. Prepares instructional materials including examinations, course outlines, syllabi, visual aids, and presentations, as necessary. Instruct, manage and supervise individuals and groups in regular classrooms and/or computerized classrooms through lectures, discussions, conferences, demonstrations, individualized instruction and other appropriate methods.
Evaluate instruction and learning through use of written, oral, and performance tests. Maintain a student-oriented approach to education. Recommends students for advancement and graduation. Maintains and submit accurate and current reports and records regarding student accountability, attendance, performance and follow-up. Establish and maintain regular office hours. Advise students during office hours as well as at other times as needed. Assist advisors, department chair, faculty and department staff in maintaining an effective program. Attends faculty and other meetings as assigned. Improves professionally and maintain currency in courses taught by reading and using materials found in professional publications and keeping abreast of new developments, trends and techniques through participation in workshops, conferences, and seminars. Maintains desirable classroom conditions.
Graduation from an accredited institution with terminal, earned degree appropriate to discipline. ABD accepted. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university. A PhD or ABD in Creative Writing is required at the time of appointment.
Preference is given to candidates with significant publications in fiction or poetry, or both. Experience managing/ publishing a literary journal is also desirable.
A successful candidate will teach first-year composition, introductory creative writing, intermediate fiction or poetry writing, and other courses in his or her area of specialty.
Ability to develops and actively pursue scholarly and/or creative projects, and contribute to department, college, and university through dependable work on assigned committees.
