Designs and teaches four courses per semester (teaching assignments will be rhetoric and composition courses, with the occasional possibility of other writing or literature courses if departmental circumstances require). Demonstrates proven knowledge of and experience in teaching these courses. Plans, prepares and follows an approved course of study with measurable objectives for each course taught. Prepares instructional materials including examinations, course outlines, syllabi, visual aids, and presentations, as necessary
Instruct, manage and supervise individuals and groups in regular classrooms and/or computerized classrooms through lectures, discussions, conferences, demonstrations, individualized instruction and other appropriate methods.
Evaluate instruction and learning through use of written, oral, and performance tests. Maintains a student-oriented approach to education. Recommends students for advancement and graduation. Maintains and submits accurate and current reports and records regarding student accountability, attendance, performance and follow-up.
Establish and maintain regular office hours.
Advise students during office hours as well as at other times as needed.
Assist advisors, department chair, faculty and department staff in maintaining an effective program. Attends faculty and other meetings as assigned. Improves professionally and maintain currency in courses taught by reading and using materials found in professional publications and keeping abreast of new developments, trends and techniques through participation in workshops, conferences, and seminars. Maintains desirable classroom conditions
Graduation from an accredited institution with terminal, earned degree appropriate to discipline. ABD accepted. Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, techniques, and discipline content. Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university. See preferred qualifications for discipline or program-specific minimum qualifications.
The ideal candidate will have experience in Distance Education pedagogy and online course development. Experience with teaching distance courses, scholarship in Distance Education, and/or an active research agenda in this area is also preferred. We seek a colleague who expects to serve on our Distance Education committee, collaborate on strengthening the department’s Distance Education offerings, and teach at least one section per semester of our online First-Year writing courses. Preferred secondary interests include, but are not limited to, Writing Program Administration, multimodal composing, new media studies, public rhetorics, and/or cross-cultural rhetorics. A Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or related field is required at time of appointment.
