The information services department is a central IT department that manages all aspects of technology for the entire University. Within Information Services, there is a Technology Infrastructure division consisting of a Servers and Systems team, an AV infrastructure team, and the Network Operations team. Reporting to the Executive Director for Technology Infrastructure and working in the Network Operations team, the Network Engineer is deeply involved in the design, deployment, support, and analysis of all aspects of the University network. The design and deployment includes all core, distribution, and edge layer network hardware, wireless infrastructure, core networking services (DNS, DHCP, Radius, etc.), and the development and implementation of network policies and procedures. The support and analysis includes monitoring the network for optimal performance and reliability, upgrading network design to incorporate new technology trends, capacity planning to meet University’s growth, and network security analysis and response.

Maintain the core network health, consisting primarily of Cisco Nexus infrastructure, in each of the two primary data center locations spanning our two campuses.
Design, implement and support overall routing and switching topology of the campus network to support fast and secure network connectivity from the cores to the clients.
Work with additional network infrastructure, including firewalls, network services (i.e. DNS, DHCP, Radius, etc.), load balancers, VPN and radius appliances.
Establish and maintain Data Center network design in support of server, storage, and enterprise application requirements, including blade server chassis’, a highly virtualized server environment, a large scale VDI deployment, high-performing SAN infrastructures, several communications technologies, and a full array of enterprise applications.
Participate in and occasionally manage networking technology specific projects to support upgrades and new initiatives.
Design, implement, and test information technology security mechanisms and systems in the context of the networking infrastructure.
Assist in creating and developing formal guidelines and policies to ensure appropriate network systems support and designs.
Work with Information Services staff and appropriate members of the Academic community to provide responsive solutions and options for network problems and new opportunities.
Associate’s degree, or vocational or technical school degree in Networking Technologies required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Minimum 5 - 7 years of relevant experience required.
Expertise in planning, designing, and implementing enterprise-level network technologies is required.
Hands-on experience with Cisco networking hardware, Aruba Wireless infrastructure, and experience with various routing protocols is preferred.
Strong communications skills are required. Must be able to explain difficult abstract concepts verbally, in writing (email, proposals, documentation), and though more formal presentations.
Ability to work collaboratively, cooperatively, and closely with peers and involved senior management is required.
Awareness of personal strengths and weaknesses is required; including an ability to identify and improve in appropriate areas. Must be able to adapt to changing requirements as necessary.
The job occasionally requires work to be performed during overnight and weekend hours.
Frequent walking to any building on campus.
Occasional work in network closets spread out throughout campus.
Frequent lifting and carrying of small equipment up to 25 lbs. Infrequent lifting of equipment up to 50 lbs. Rare lifting of equipment up to 120 lbs, assisted by additional personnel.
