Under the supervision of the Director of Excel Programs, the Retention Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, management, and assessment of a comprehensive retention program specific to Excel students. The retention program Excel @ MSU Denver, is focused on serving students who participated in the Excel Pre-Collegiate Program and are currently attending MSU Denver. The objective of the program is to support students through to graduation by researching student persistence/retention issues and developing a broad range of strategies, activities and programs that support student success/college graduation. The Retention Coordinator will work with Enrollment Services, advising, tutoring center, career services, faculty and other departments to coordinate retention-related initiatives and to provide student centered service to meet the needs of the students.
40% Support Excel @ MSU Denver students through to graduation by researching student persistence/retention issues and developing a broad range of strategies, activities and programs that support student success/college graduation. Communicate with students on a regular basis in-person, telephone, mail, and e-mail to facilitate retention activities, to help resolve student barriers to success. Collect and analyze data to determine effectiveness of retention program/activities in helping students succeed and persist. Develop and maintain various databases and methods to communicate with and track students. Prepare weekly, monthly, and annual program reports.
25% Collaborate with Excel Pre-Collegiate Team and community colleges to facilitate a smooth transition for students to the university. Develop collaborative relationships and partnerships with colleagues in student success and learning assistance programs to address students’ academic needs. Participate in various departmental, campus and university initiatives related to retention and student success including outreach events.
20% Provide leadership, supervision and training for Excel Program Ambassadors (student employees).
10% Assist with Excel Pre-Collegiate Program on-campus events, parent workshops, financial aid workshops, summer camp and other activities when needed.
5% – Other duties as assigned
Minimum of one year experience in student support services, retention programs, or related programs.
Experience working in a program aimed at helping young adults succeed
Experience working with a diverse, underrepresented population, including students of color as well as traditional and non-traditional students.
Experience working in an environment that requires independence and teamwork,
At least two years of experience using Microsoft Word and database systems.
Master’s degree in education, higher education, counseling, social work, human services, or other relevant fields.
Experience with retention programs and knowledge in research/best practices in student persistence. Development of retention activities and programs that support student success. Successfully implemented and/or managed retention programs at the higher education level.
Must possess strong interpersonal, organizational, presentation and communication skills
