The School of Health Sciences, one of eight schools and colleges of Quinnipiac University seeks an experienced and innovative leader in health sciences to be its next dean. Our School of Health Sciences is the largest school in the University by enrollment, and houses programs in basic sciences and health sciences, offers 5 undergraduate programs (Athletic Training, Biomedical Sciences, Health Science Studies, Microbiology and Immunology, and Diagnostic Imaging), 3 combined undergraduate and graduate programs, and 9 graduate degree programs (Biomedical Sciences, Anesthesiologist Assistant, Cardiovascular Perfusion, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Social Work, Pathologist’s Assistant, Physician Assistant, Radiologist Assistant). The school boasts state-of-the-art faculities and equipment designed for collaborative learning for students in our School of Medicine, School of Nursing and the health professions within the School of Health Sciences.  The School currently has 85 full-time faculty and approximately 1,730 undergraduate and 720 graduate students. Responsibilities

The School of Health Sciences seeks a forward thinking Dean who will develop and implement strategies that will position the school and its graduates as competent professionals in an evolving healthcare landscape.  Broad areas of responsibilities include leadership and the development of a guiding vision as it relates to the education of future basic scientists, healthcare professionals, and both basic and clinical research.  The Dean will have primary oversight of the academic and business operations, collaborations, institutional advancement and external relationships for the school that includes undergraduate and graduate programs.  Scope of the position includes:

Academic and Business Operations

  • Operation of the School of Health Sciences including academic, fiscal, and administrative matters (e.g., develops and manage of the school’s budget, facilities, strategic planning, and relationships with other components of the University).
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the curriculum and related educational programs consistent with the expectations of the University’s leadership, the Board of Trustees, the public, and other constituents as appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with all accreditation standards, University policies, and all other regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee faculty and staff recruitment, evaluation, and retention, and foster a community that values balance between teaching, service and research.
  • Participate in student recruitment, admission, and outreach.
  • Represent the school at the local, national and international levels by involvement, with medical education, sciences, and related organizations.
  • Promote and support the use of technology in health science and science education.

Collaborations

  • Develop strategies and establish high quality and effective interprofessional education opportunities and training experiences with the programs in the School of Nursing, School of Medicine and outside institutions.
  • Work closely with the College of Arts and Science and across the university to support ongoing efforts to transform the undergraduate core curriculum by incorporating the learning paradigm and develop collaborations which integrate undergraduate and graduate programs.
  • Support new program growth that keeps Quinnipiac in the forefront of the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.
  • Promote the school’s vision, mission, and core values, and by example, instill and nurture an institutional environment that supports these.
  • Build a diverse and inclusive community to advance learning and scholarship for a changing world; develop intellectually curious and globally, culturally competent graduates to support the diversity of healthcare; incorporate the tenets of the university diversity and inclusion plan.
  • Communicate effectively with students, faculty, alumni, community and state leaders, the public, colleagues within the University, and other academic institutions.

 Institutional Advancement and External Relationships

  • Actively support and advance fund-raising initiatives for the institution by working with SHS, medical school and university development staff, faculty, department chairs, alumni, advisory boards and donors.
  • Cultivate relationships with key external constituents to support student career opportunities, student placement and new initiatives for the expansion of school programs and resources.

A unique opportunity and key area of focus for the new Dean will be defining, developing and sustaining robust interprofessional collaborations between School of Health Sciences, the newly launched Medical School, and the School of Nursing in fostering team-based care and serve as a national model of interprofessional health professions education.   The Dean, alongside the Deans of Medicine and Nursing, will develop frameworks, policies, initiatives, and implementation strategies that foster collaborative learning and authentic student experiences.  In addition, the Dean will be one of three leaders creating the new Center for Interprofessional Healthcare Education, which serves as a think tank and coordinating point for identifying best practices for interprofessional education.  

 

Qualifications & Special Instructions to Applicants

The successful candidate will have meaningful experiences in the areas of Academic and Business Operations, Collaborations, Institutional Advancement and External Relationships as described.  In addition, he or she should possess:

  • A record of distinguished academic achievement, including teaching, research, service and relevant administrative experience in the health sciences field. Previous experience as a Dean, Associate Dean or similar leadership in a distinguished program/school of similar scale and scope to SHS will be preferred.
  • An engaging, energetic, and distinctive leadership style which provides a creative collaborative environment and projects a strong public presence for the school
  • Demonstrated achievements in, and commitment to, a diverse and inclusive environment that supports academic and operational excellence.
  • A focus on student centered learning.
  • Experience in managing the business/operational aspects within higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain strong and positive relationships with faculty, students and staff in the school, and ability to lead through shared decision-making.
  • Evidence of collaboration and program development with other schools, and working collegially as a member the Deans Council and with other members of the University’s senior administration. An ability to balance advocacy for the school with the needs of the broader university.
  • Ability to navigate the complexities of inter-school collaboration through strong relationship building and seasoned professionalism.
  • Demonstrated understanding of issues in academic healthcare within the larger evolving landscape.
  • Previous experience working within an academic medical or university development environment for fundraising and other long term development initiatives
  • Sound judgment, perspective, and unimpeachable integrity.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills.
  • An earned doctorate in one of the basic or health sciences (required).
