Job Description Summary:
Office of International Student Services

International Advisor:
The University of La Verne welcomes applicants for the position of International Advisor in the Office of International Student Services, of the Student Affairs Division. Reporting directly to the Director of the Office of International Student Services, this position is responsible for the admission of non-immigrant students to study at the University. The International Advisor will maintain compliance with all Federal regulations, follow all Department of Homeland Security requirements and provide advice and counsel to all non-immigrant students.

Specific duties of the position include:
• Advising, counseling and assisting international students on matters related to university life and the U.S. study experience, (including immigration regulations SEVIS), finances, employment, adjustment to the campus, and maintenance of student status.
• Processing non-immigrant visa applications (I-20), including school transfers, reinstatements, employment authorization (OPTCPT), and change of status.
• Advising student groups and supports student activities and programs.
• Serving as a liaison to federal government agencies regarding issues related to non-immigrant students.

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and three (3) years of work experience providing international student services in a college or university. Candidates must have familiarity with SEVIS and F-1, J-1 regulations and have the ability to work within and across diverse communities. Additionally, candidates must have strong problem solving and crisis management skills as well as excellent organizational, interpersonal, intercultural and communication skills. Knowledge of Banner and participation in international educational professional organizations are a plus.

Advises student groups and supports student activities and programs. Serves as a liaison to federal government agencies regarding issues related to non-immigrant students.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and three years in an office providing international student services in a college or university; familiarity with SEVIS and F-1, J-1 regulations
- Experience living or working directly with persons of various nationalities
- Evidence of strong problem solving and crisis management skills
- Evidence of strong organizational, interpersonal, intercultural and communication skills
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (as required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to serve as a Designated School Official).

Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree, preferably in International Studies, Intercultural Communication, Counseling, Education, Student Personnel Administration, or related field
- Four to five years of full-time experience in an international office working directly to provide immigration advising, counseling, orientation and programming; working knowledge of SEVISand F-1, J-1 regulations
- Knowledge of Banner
- Evidence of participation in international education professional organizations.
