Assistant Professor in Marital and Family Therapy

Assistant Professor, tenure-track, 9-month position

 (with summer teaching available), beginning August 2015.

The Department of School, Family, and Mental Health Professions at the University of San Diego has a tenure-track position opening at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Marital & Family Therapy (MFT) Program.

The Assistant Professor will be expected to teach courses and provide clinical supervision in the MFT masters program. Faculty members are also expected to demonstrate scholarly productivity, as reflected in research grants, publications, and presentations at national and/or international conferences.  Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to student advising, participating in admissions, accreditation maintenance, curriculum assessment and development, and service to the Department, University, community, and MFT profession. 

The Department of School, Family and Mental Health Professions at the University of San Diego includes masters programs in MFT and Counseling (School and Clinical Mental Health subspecialties). The MFT Program has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) since 1992.  MFT faculty has published several commonly used MFT textbooks, including Essential Skills in Family Therapy, 2nd Edition, Essential Assessment Skills for Couple and Family Therapists, and the newly published Clinician’s Guide to Research Methods in Family Therapy: Foundations of Evidence-based Practice.  Research interests of faculty include collaborative care, couples, family therapy training, global mental health, and evidence-based practice in MFT.

Required Qualifications:  

The individual chosen for this position must meet the following minimum criteria:

• Earned PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy. However, individuals with doctorates in other closely related mental health disciplines will be considered provided they meet the other qualifications noted below.

• AAMFT Approved Supervisor (or eligibility)

• Licensed or license-eligible in California

• Clinical training in systems oriented couple and family therapy

• Evidence of ability to be an effective college/graduate teacher

• Evidence of ability to be a productive scholar

• Competency in working with culturally diverse students and families

Preferred Qualifications:

• The ability to conduct supervision in Spanish

• Degree from a COAMFTE accredited program

• Research interests focusing on diversity and family therapy
