The Department of Computer Science at the University of Alabama invites applications for two (2) faculty positions at either the Assistant or Associate levels, to begin August 2015. The area of focus is software engineering, with specific application to cybersecurity and big data. Outstanding candidates from all areas of software engineering and computer science will be considered. At the time of appointment, candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field, with solid evidence of superior research and scholarly accomplishments, as well as demonstrated excellence in teaching.
The University of Alabama is considered the Capstone of higher education in Alabama and is also the largest institution in the State, with an enrollment of roughly 35,000 students. The University was ranked in 2014 by US News and World Report as 36th among US public universities. In 2012-2013, the University led the nation among public universities for National Merit Scholars. Additionally, over the past five years, the University is second only to Harvard in the number of Goldwater Scholars.
The Department of Computer Science, housed in the College of Engineering, has twenty-two faculty members (14 tenured/tenure track faculty, six of whom have interests in software engineering), roughly 450 undergraduates in an ABET accredited B.S. degree program, and approximately 50 M.S. and Ph.D. students. The department also offers a newly created Software Engineering Concentration for its undergraduates.
The Department and College of Engineering are undergoing a period of extensive growth. The Department is housed in a new state-of-the art four building science and engineering complex. The software engineering faculty in the Department are PIs or co-PIs on 12 active awards (over $3.6M) across four funding agencies. The Department is home to the Center for Advanced Public Safety (CAPS), which currently has over $10M in funding focused on technology to improve public safety, law enforcement, homeland security and traffic safety. In addition, our faculty work with the newly created UA Cyber Institute (UACI), which is tasked with consolidating the Cyber research, teaching and service activities across the University.
