Detailed Job Description


The Dean of Student Affairs will create the vision and provide the direction for all aspects of student life, overseeing the offices of Residence Life, Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Intercultural Student Engagement (including the Office of International Student Services), Center for Student Involvement, Disability Services, and Student Conduct. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Dean will serve as a key member of the Chief Operating Officer Management Team and collaborate with senior College administrators, faculty, students, parents, and volunteers. The Dean will advise the COO on all issues relating to the student experience at RISD, including commencement and new student orientation programs; build relationships to help create a positive and supportive student community, centered in academic and personal success; and uphold the values of community, inclusiveness, responsibility, leadership, and wellness in students. A priority for the Dean will be to help achieve institutional enrollment and retention goals and ensure that students are receiving the necessary support to have a positive and engaged experience at RISD. Prior budgeting experience is required, as the Dean will manage and maintain oversight of the student affairs budgets for housing revenue, totaling approximately $8 million, as well as individual program expenditures and student activities fees, totaling approximately $1 million. In addition, the Dean will maintain responsibility for the hiring, training, professional development, management, and evaluation of nearly 50 staff and student workers.  



A master's degree in higher education, with a focus on student development/counseling, and at least 10 years progressive student affairs experience (including staff supervision, project management and assessment, policy creation and implementation, and budget management) are required. Expectations include strong interpersonal, organizational, leadership, and managerial skills; excellent verbal and written skills; and the ability and desire to work closely with students, parents, staff, and faculty. The Dean of Student Affairs will display incisive intellect and the willingness to actively explore and critique ideas, combined with the professionalism to fully support and execute a team decision regardless of personal point of view. This position requires a high-energy team player, who has the ability to think strategically, is committed to a systems approach, and who can multitask under firm deadlines while maintaining confidentiality.
