Detailed Job Description

The Division of Foundation Studies, Rhode Island School of Design seeks an Assistant Professor in Drawing (full-time), with appointment to begin fall 2015.

Drawing is one of three programs (Drawing, Spatial Dynamics and Design) comprising the studio curriculum for all first-year undergraduate students at RISD. Each studio class meets one full day a week, in sections of approximately 20 students, with section groups preserved across programs. Faculty in Foundation Studies teach four courses a year, advise students, participate in curriculum development, serve on college committees, and maintain active professional practices.

In Foundation Drawing Studio, students explore a variety of conceptual, abstract, and perceptually-based drawing approaches. Through an intensive focus on the language of drawing, students gain insights into the responsive and intellectual aspects of creative process that are essential to visual thinking.

The Division is open to a radically diverse range of approaches to Drawing - Western and/or non-Western, studio-based and/or post-studio, traditional and/or new media, classical and/or experimental, fine art and/or design. Candidates should be familiar with emerging technologies and have an understanding of their relationship to both traditional and new media practices. It is essential that candidates have a distinctive vision and pedagogical approach, and are prepared to teach Drawing as a vital experience for a range of disciplines. Designers and artists from all disciplines are encouraged to apply as well as those whose approach is broadly interdisciplinary.

Applicants should have a terminal degree in a relevant field or equivalent, evidence of teaching at the college level, and a strong record of creative work and ongoing professional activity.
