Position: Assistant Professor of Elementary Mathematics Education (Tenure-Track)
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education at The University of Alabama invites applications for an energetic, full-time tenure-track faculty member to join the elementary education faculty in the area of elementary mathematics education. The University of Alabama has grown significantly since 2008 with total enrollments growing 28.8% to 34,852. U.S. News and World Report’s 2014 rankings placed The University of Alabama 36th among public universities. The incoming freshman academic credentials have risen since 2008, including an ACT increase of 6.2% to 25.8, as well as over 125 national merit scholars and 60% of undergraduate enrollment from out-of-state. Elementary education includes approximately 500 majors seeking initial teacher licensure (grades K-6) and more than 40 graduate students in masters, educational specialist, and doctoral degree programs. Elementary mathematics education has a strong partnership with secondary mathematics education faculty and the mathematics department which includes a large three-year Math Science Partnership grant. Currently, existing STEM partnerships have more than $3 million in externally funded projects and $1 million of grant proposals under review for program growth, research, and professional development projects.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate [or pending to be
    completed before the position start date of
    August 16, 2015] in education related to the
    teaching and learning of mathematics
  • At least two years teaching experience in
    elementary classrooms grades K-6
  • The ability to pursue a research agenda and
    external funding
  • The ability to teach courses in mathematics
    education and elementary education
  • The ability to incorporate multicultural
    perspectives into instruction, including
    inclusion concepts
  • The ability to integrate technology into
    one’s own instruction of education courses
  • A commitment to supervise and observe
    methods students and student teachers when
    needed
  • A commitment to collaborate with
    mathematics, mathematics education, and STEM
    education faculty to seek external funding
    for research, development, and teacher
    professional development activities

The position also seeks, but does not require, applicants with interests in:

  • Experience teaching standard-based K-6 math
    teaching
  • Experience with ELL populations and/or
    issues in equity
  • Experience working in collaborative settings
  • Experience of effective teaching at the
    college level
  • Strong knowledge of The Common Core State
    Standards for Mathematics
  • Interest in state initiatives (e.g. AMSTI,
    math specialists)
  • Potential to teach/develop online graduate
    courses
