The Department of Family Medicine in the College of Community Health Sciences at The University of Alabama (UA) seeks a full-time assistant or associate professor for a Health Educator tenure earning position. The department has a faculty of 45 primary care oriented medical educators, and the College’s faculty-driven community practice represents the largest multi-disciplinary group medical practice in West Alabama, providing high-quality, patient-centered care to all communities it serves, including faculty, staff, and students of the University. College faculty are responsible for teaching medical students and family medicine residents in a clinical setting, engaging in research and scholarly activity, and providing direct patient care. Candidates for the position must hold an earned doctorate in Health Education, Health Promotion, or Wellness, or in a closely-related field. In particular, the Health Educator will be responsible for: 1) developing and implementing a patient health education and health communications curriculum for medical students and family medicine residents, and teaching medical students and residents how to improve patient health by providing health education and making effective use of a health educator; 2) organizing and delivering health education services in the College’s community practice, University Medical Center (UMC), via direct patient contact, group visits, written materials, the UMC website and patient portal, and UMC social media sites; 3) conducting health needs assessments in our patient population, prioritizing areas of greatest need and developing and providing educational interventions for high-risk populations; 4) serving as a resource for faculty providers and staff to enhance their skills in health education; and 5) conducting research and scholarly activity in the field of health education, including preparing, coordinating, and submitting grant applications to obtain funding for health education programs and related work.
The College of Community Health Sciences is dedicated to the mission of improving and promoting the health of individuals and communities in Alabama and the region through leadership in medical education and primary care; the provision of high quality, accessible, health care services; and scholarship. The Department of Family Medicine is critical to this mission, and since the College’s founding in 1972, has provided excellence in the teaching and training of medical students, residents, and fellows and providing outstanding clinical care for the University and surrounding community.
The College’s outpatient facilities are housed in the 77,000-square-foot University Medical Center, located on the UA campus and with 65,000 annual patient visits. Inpatient training occurs at the nearby DCH Regional Medical Center, which serves a seven-county area in West Alabama. The College’s residency – The University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency, Tuscaloosa – currently with 45 residents, is unopposed and has graduated more than 400 physicians, half of whom now practice in rural and underserved areas in Alabama and the region. The College also operates four fellowships for family physicians in obstetrics, hospital medicine, sports medicine, and behavioral health and rural public psychiatry; serves as a regional campus for the University of Alabama School of Medicine for the training of a cohort of 70 third- and fourth-year medical students; has received national recognition for its rural programs; and houses UA’s Institute for Rural Health Research.
In addition to the professional requirements listed above, the successful applicant must also demonstrate a commitment to the College’s mission to train physicians to serve rural and underserved areas, an ability to work collaboratively, and a willingness to participate enthusiastically in the life of the College.
