The Veteran/Military Student Support Coordinator will serve as the lead on all non-VA educational benefits support services for students who are veterans, active duty military personnel, and military partners and dependents. Please note: this position is not a School Certifying Official, and does not have oversight of GI Bill benefits or financial management of student veteran accounts.
The Coordinator will develop, coordinate, and assess programs for veteran and military students which are designed to facilitate their success at the University by educating students on relevant resources and developing connections between students and the university community. Existing programs include Veterans Days, graduation and recognition events, new student orientation/ transition events, and co-sponsored career events. The Coordinator will serve as a facilitator of information between key MSU Denver departments which see and serve veteran/military students. New programs may include military student mentoring programs, and targeted academic support systems. The Coordinator will make data-driven decisions to shape the direction of programs and services, with the overarching goal of supporting military student retention and graduation. Additionally, the Coordinator will be a primary liaison for community military and veteran organizations and agencies and will actively develop relationships and collaborative partnerships with such organizations which will benefit MSU Denver students. The Coordinator will make individual referrals as appropriate and will also develop systemic methods for connecting students with the pertinent resources. As such the Coordinator will cultivate an excellent working relationship with military organizations/agencies and also with military and veteran students themselves. For students determined to be at-risk of attrition at the University, the Coordinator will serve as a point of contact, helping to coordinate support services and ensure that the students are navigating the college experience appropriately. The Coordinator will have responsibility for developing communication systems for current military and veteran students, including management of a website, publication materials, and other creative forms of communication and marketing to the student population. The Coordinator will actively participate in relevant University committees. Likewise, the Coordinator will lead outreach and education for faculty and staff on relevant matters effecting military students. Using a collaborative approach with other departments (i.e. Center for Faculty Development), the Coordinator will provide training and development for faculty and staff to further support MSU Denver military and veteran students.
BA/BS degree from a regionally accredited institution or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated effective written communication skills. Experience initiating, developing, and managing programs and/or events. Experience creating collaborative relationships to develop and/or implement a program or project.
Military experience or experience working with military programs. MA/MS degree in higher education/student affairs, social work, or a related field. Experience working with college students. Assessment and/or data management experience. Knowledge of student development theory and/or practice. Budget management skills. Demonstrated experience working in recruitment and retention with underrepresented students including students of color.
Must possess effective oral communication skills.
