Detailed Job Description

Serves on the counseling team working with students and families; performs verification and appeals for undergraduate population. Primary resource for Financial Literacy;  Manages and reconciles Federal Perkins loan, Federal Nursing loan and Massachusetts No Interest loan programs. Manages scholarship application and awarding process in AcademicWorks software including all reporting. Assists with occasional evening and weekend outreach activities.

Job Requirements

  1. Perform file review, verification, and financial aid appeals
  2. Counsels student and families
  3. Contributes to peak activities such as summer aid processing and disbursement cleanup
  4. Develops and maintains a Financial Literacy program (including but not limited to SALT) for the Salem State community
  5. Oversees the scholarship software system, AcademicWorks, for the yearly endowed, non-endowed and department scholarship awarding, liaison to the Honors Program for Honors and Tsongas scholarship awards
  6. Manage and yearly reconciliation of the Federal Perkins loan, Federal Nursing loan and the Massachusetts No Interest loan, including but not limited to Entrance Counseling, Master Promissory note completion and Exit counseling
  7. Cross-train in processes including but not limited to: R2T4 calculations, SAP, ISIR suspense and Study Abroad
  8. Develops office policies, procedures and operation calendar in conjunction with the Director and administrative staff
  9. Ad-hoc member of the SSU Scholarship committee
  10. Demonstrates sensitivity to students, faculty and staff of varying racial, ethnic, religious, gender, cultural, disability, sexual orientation and socioeconomic backgrounds
  11. Demonstrates sensitivity to students with a diversity of learning styles
  12. Serves as a role model and mentor to students
  13. Serves on committees assigned by the President
  14. Other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree
  2. One to three years of experience in a comprehensive financial aid office and /or within higher education setting
  3. A working knowledge of financial aid programs, procedures, needs analysis, and file review processes
  4. Ability to work well with students, staff, faculty, and outside agencies, and to provide quality customer service
  5. Knowledge of Federal and State Aid Regulations
  6. Possess good oral and written communication skills
  7. Possess strong managerial, supervisory, and organizational skills
  8. Possess strong technology skills, and the ability to give attention to detail


Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Master's degree
  2. Experience using PeopleSoft
