Detailed Job Description

The SASP Veterans Retention Advisor provides direct academic, career and personal guidance to support the academic success, transfer and graduation of military and veteran participants. The Veterans Retention Advisor facilitates the development of an educational plan, monitors and documents academic progress, completes follow-up contacts, and makes referrals for other student support services and community resources for program participants. The Veterans Retention Advisor will recruit, select, and manage a caseload of students. This position requires the coordination and collaboration of AACC military and veteran resources to provide targeted services to meet the needs of the students, make connections to resources, build relationships and empower students to achieve their educational goals. This position requires that the applicant be knowledgeable and skilled in establishing rapport and problem solving as well as have the ability to provide a broad range of services designed to ensure the success of military and veteran students. Additionally, the Veteran Retention Advisor will assist the SASP director in the development of services and initiatives in areas where military and veteran students intersect with first generation, low income, under prepared, and minority students.  

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in higher education, education administration, counseling, student personnel administration, guidance, human services, social work, psychology, education or related area.

Minimum three years experience in providing direct services in an educational,
social service or non-profit environment working with military/veterans providing mentoring, coaching, academic, personal, and/or career guidance and advice.

Experience with military/veteran community and culture, including working knowledge of VA benefit and certification processes

A high degree of comfort and experience in the online learning environment

Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to make group presentations

Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently

Previous experience working with diverse populations

Demonstrated collaboration and partnership work.

Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of the program including evenings, weekends, and other AACC sites

Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PPT, etc)

Project management skills

Ability to multi-task in a fast pace environment

Experience working with low-income, first generation students

Assessment or program evaluation skills  

Preferred Qualifications

Advising and case management experience

Four- five years experience providing direct services in an educational, social service or non-profit environment working with military/veterans providing mentoring, coaching, academic, personal, and/or career guidance and advice.
