Detailed Job Description

The West Valley-Mission Community College District is seeking a talented individual to fill the position of Heating and Air Conditioning Technician. Comprised of two colleges, West Valley College and Mission College, we are located in the heart of Silicon Valley. Our staff and faculty are among the most qualified in the state and our students appreciate our two colleges for our friendly staff and supportive atmosphere.

Under general supervision, perform skilled electrical and mechanical work involving installation, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilating, refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, energy management systems and fire alarm systems and assist other trades, as assigned.

100% of full time, 37.5 hours per week, 12 months per year, with anticipated start date of November 19, 2014. Schedule may change to include some evening or weekend hours, as needed. This position is a member of the West Valley-Mission Classified Employees Association (WVMCEA) Operations & Support Services Employee Unit.

Work Location: District Facilities Department is located on the West Valley College campus, Saratoga, CA; however, work may be required at either West Valley College or at Mission College, Santa Clara, CA.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Education & Experience – Any combination equivalent to:

  • Completion of apprentice (O.J.T.) program, college or technical school in HVAC refrigeration, principles of heating and cooling systems; AND/OR
  • Extensive journey level experience with a variety of commercial heating and cooling systems;


2. Demonstrated ability to effectively work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of power, refrigerant charging and brazing.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair a wide variety of equipment.
  • Five years HVAC field experience.
  • California HVAC License
  • EPA Certified
  • Universal CFC certified.
  • Honeywell Tridium Certified
  • NATE certified
  • Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations related to the HVAC trade.
  • Ability to interpret blue prints and schematics
  • Ability to read and understand manufacturer’s recommendations as to operations and maintenance of large equipment and systems.
  • Ability to make decisive independent decisions

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities

  • Test, inspect, and repair refrigeration and HVAC equipment after locating defects in operation.
  • Maintain and repair refrigeration and air conditioning systems, centrifugal and component parts such as cooling towers, water circulation components, evaporators and condensers.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, clean and repair low pressure boilers, gas and electric heating systems including forced air, combination units, air handlers, heat pumps, heat strips and others.
  • Disassemble and clean controls, contacts, orifices, tubes, heating surfaces; change filters, filter dryers and component parts.
  • Inspect and perform minor repairs on the emergency generator.
  • Perform weekly inspection of elevator, report maintenance problems to supervisor.
  • Maintain and operate Energy Management Systems; program start up and ending times; work with contractor on new programs.
  • Inspect, perform minor repairs, and reset fire alarm system.
  • Coordinate activities and work with outside contractors per instruction from supervisor.
  • Estimate time, material and cost involved.
  • Maintain preventative maintenance procedures, records and reports.
  • Calibrate, clean, repair or replace electrical pneumatic and high/low voltage controls, thermostats, timers, safety controls and regulators.
  • Install and repair pumps, motors, fans, compressors, valves and air handling equipment.
  • Provide direction and training to helpers, as assigned.
  • Present to the supervisor matters requiring the supervisor’s decision. Act on the supervisor’s directives and recommendations.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors within the area of responsibility.
  • Attend and participate in District and/or College provided training or information sessions. Incorporate new information or technology into existing job duties as directed by supervisor.
  • Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Demonstrated Knowledge of:

  • Principles of large commercial heating and air conditioning systems;
  • Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in repair of boilers, heating, ventilation refrigeration and air conditioning systems; and
  • Applicable plumbing, electrical and safety codes.

Demonstrated Ability to:

  • Install, maintain and repair a variety of heating and air condition equipment;
  • Analyze, diagnose and repair system malfunctions;
  • Interpret blueprints, schematic, instructional manual and OSHA requirements;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with others;
  • Keep records and prepare reports; and
  • Effectively interact with people of diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.

Salary and Benefits

  • Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,613–$5,042 (monthly); with a maximum earnable monthly, excluding longevity and educational growth, of $6,078.
