The Director of Research and Sponsored Programs at the University of La Verne directly assists faculty researchers with a full-range of administrative and financial services relating to sponsored research topics, which are funded from a variety of sponsors, each with its own set of requirements and regulations, and varying in size, scope and complexity. The Director works as a team member focused on bringing together all areas of research administration in an effort to bridge gaps and provide full-service grant administration to Principal Investigators from proposal submission to project close out.

The Director is responsible for pre-award and post-award functions for externally funded grants/contracts. The Director administers the support, review, and submission functions for applications for external funding of faculty and student research and training at the University.

The Director also shares responsibility for bringing human subjects protection applications to the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and maintaining related training materials and programs, including on-site workshops, for the responsible conduct of research. The Director supports the IRB Chair in administrative functions of the Board.

Specific Duties

1 – Supervises and trains administrative staff and research assistants who, with the Director, are performing office and technical support functions such as preparing notices of grant award, vetting IRB applications for member and senior staff review, maintaining IRB files and correspondence, including correspondence on behalf of the faculty Board/Chair.

2 – Supervises the maintenance of research activity databases and the Office website and periodically redesigns and upgrades these systems and sites

3 – Works closely with the Associate Provost to develop, monitor, and negotiate policies and procedures for grants, contracts, and responsible conduct of research.

4 – Works closely with the Associate Provost, University leadership, and faculty, through the Grants Advisory Council, in developing and implementing strategic plans and policies for advancing research and sponsored programs.

5 – Works with project team, administrators & management to support development of competitive grant proposals. Provides training to project team as needed.

6 – Reviews, interprets and applies sponsored program guidelines and policies. Ensures requirements are incorporated into proposals seeking external funding.

7 – Works with project and administrative staff on existing project budget modifications that require sponsor approval.

8 – Coordinates the internal institutional approval process prior to submission of grant proposals.

9 – Writes policies and procedures related to sponsored program administration as needed.

10 – Ensures project director compliance with pre-award human subjects and conflict of interest disclosure requirements at the time of proposal submission.

11 – Performs searches for external funding opportunities with the support of the Grants Advisory Council.

12 – Maintains a record-keeping system to track proposal submission and completion of faculty training programs.

13 – Serves as liaison with University of La Verne Finance Office as regarding ORSP and grant budgets. Tracks and monitors ORSP expenditures. Assures budgetary compliance with relevant OMB Circulars, funding agency rules, and University regulations.

14 – Receives, revises, and negotiates new and continuing Federal, State, and selected other award documents. Responsible for managing external administrative compliance issues and renegotiation with funding agencies. Assures compliance of proposals with all formal aspects of solicitations.

15 – Assembles and submits electronic grant proposals via federal and foundation web portals, serving as administrator for Grants.gov, NIH Commons, NSF Fastlane, and similar designations; similarly, assembles and submits hard-copy proposals as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters Degree, Ph.D. strongly preferred.
At least 5 years experience in research administration in a university or equivalent environment. Extensive familiarity with federal regulatory documents. Extensive experience with spreadsheets, databases, Internet, and editing software. Experience in research and in cultivating a culture of research within a university/college. Experience in resource development through private foundations.
