The Financial Aid specialist will promote student success by developing and maintaining University-wide programs to educate students on financial literacy, credit card debt and private loans. The person in this position must have excellent written and oral (including public speaking) skills in both English and Spanish. This position will fill a void in the delivery of services to student borrowers by informing them of their debt load. This position will strengthen as well as support the Office of Financial Aid by providing one point of contact to address the issue of educating our students on debt. The financial literacy specialist must maintain current knowledge of regulations, laws and trends in student financial aid and federal and state legislation as they apply to the University; participate in on-going training activities and other special assignments. Additionally, the position will develop and facilite Finacial Literacy workshops and foster relationships on campus, off campus, high schools as well as vendors/lenders to maximize the tools available to students and would be students and their families. Additionally, this position will work closely with the Program Coordinators and Counseling team to assist with every aspect associated with the accurate and timely processing and awarding of student financial aid.

Candidate should have knowledge of the MS Office products but not limited to MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Access. The incumbent should be able to receive data requests and translate them into meaningful ad-hoc queries, queries and reports as needed. Basic HTML knowledge is reccommended.

Specific Duties

Work closely with the Loan Coordinator to promote student success by developing and maintaining University-wide policies to ensure compliance with federal regulations regarding the establishing a management plan to educate students about financial literacy. Assist in conduct in-person and group entrance counseling for prospective student borrowers; conduct financial literacy workshops for student borrowers. Coordinate activities with Student Affairs and the ULV community at large, to inform students about financial literacy to include student loan and credit card debt.
This position will assist the Student Loan Coordinator with the funtions associated with Default Management and Prevention to ensure the university default rate remains low.
Partner with lending institutions and other agencies to report and update student borrowe addresses; Assist lenders and other agencies in obtaining information in efforts to have borrowers repay their student loans.
Partner with other lenders and guarantee agencies to develop materials to assist student borrowers in understanding the obligation of paying their student loans.

Speak to large groups to conduct in-person and group exit counseling sessions for student borrowers who graduate or withdraw; Coordinate with the compliance officer to ensure that students who withdraw complete the exit interview process; Coordinate with the Registrar’s Office to ensure that student borrowers who change their enrollment status are reported immediately to the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS); Place financial aid holds on student records when students leave the University and fail to complete an exit interview.

Special projects as assigned.

- Assist with coverage in counseling, advising, coverage of ACD phone line and front dest coverage of the Financial Aid office.
- Full advising duties including verification without specific assignment of a cohort of students.

Minimum Qualifications

Excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent presentation skills, Bi-lingual in English and Spanish. Must have a pleasant enthusiastic demeanor, possess excellent customer service skills and have the ability to be tactful and diplomatic.

Candidate should have knowledge of the MS Office products like but not limited to MS Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. This position should be able to receive data requests and translate them into meaningful ad-hoc queries, queries, and reports as needed. Basic HTML knowledge is recommended to help maintain the departments web pages. The position will have access to Banner, Central Processing System (CPS), Common Origination and Disbursement (COD), National Student Loan System (NSLDS).

Bachelor’s Degree
Higher Ed experience preferred
Finance experience preferred
