In addition to the traditional duties and responsibilities of the CAO, the Claflin Provost has the exciting and rewarding challenge of playing a key role in shaping the academic ethos of an institution undergoing remarkable transformation. Our strategic plan, Envisioning Greatness, positions Claflin to become a world-class premier small university “that prepares effective and visionary leaders with global perspectives” through teaching excellence, undergraduate research, and the Institute for Visionary Leadership. To achieve greatness, the Provost collaborates with faculty in designing and delivering relevant and rigorous academic programs, with members of the Cabinet in strategic planning and management; with students by being engaged in the academic, athletic, performing arts, and social aspects of a residential campus; and with the Orangeburg community in cultural and economic development.
The Claflin campus community welcomes a Provost with energetic and innovative leadership; a hands-on and collaborative management style; integrity and authenticity; effective communication with all constituencies including external funding sources; advocacy for faculty and students while holding them accountable to the highest standards of excellence within and outside the classroom; strategic and visionary thinking in developing or expanding traditional undergraduate programs, but also continuing education and graduate programs consistent with Claflin’s brand as a nationally respected university; and proactively supports enrollment management to ensure Claflin attracts and retains the brightest and best students in the region.
The Provost should have a PhD or equivalent credential with a record of accomplishment in teaching and scholarly or other professional activity commensurate with the rank of full professor, a proven track record of effective administration at the dean level or above, experience with the distinct role of HBCU, and an appreciation for private church-related higher education and the very special culture of confidence and affirmation that defines and distinguishes Claflin University.
