TITLE: Instructional Designer

DEPARTMENT: Online Education

JOB OBJECTIVES:  Manage online class delivery and ensure course readiness each term.  Provide consultation and hands-on support to faculty in the effective use of new and current instructional technologies.  Develop training materials and provide training for all instructional technologies as needed by faculty and students.  Identify, troubleshoot and resolve most Blackboard user questions and problems and escalate complex issues to administrative staff for follow-up, as appropriate. This position will include such duties as creating help-guides and performing tasks for faculty such as scanning and converting files for use in Blackboard and re-organizing Blackboard master courses.  Instructional designers will regularly migrate course content into Blackboard using University style guides. Tasks may also include student advising, calling wait-listed students, assisting with student attendance, and other clerical duties as needed.


Education/Expertise: A minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Instructional Technology, Information Technology or a related field or Blackboard training and certifications.  (Bachelor’s Degree Preferred)

Physical Requirements:   Ability to stand or sit for up to eight (8) hours per day and lift twelve (12) pounds.  Ability to work on a computer for eight (8) hours per day.

Job Requirements/Skills:

  • 5yrs or more experience in customer service or student/faculty support type environments
  • Learning management systems -Blackboard products and building blocks (certification preferred)
  • Working knowledge of computer hardware and software
  • Competent in use of web/social/mobile applications in higher education.
  • Experience with Mac computers, remote desktop applications, and helpdesk experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, standard web technologies, languages and authoring tools, and graphic/multimedia development tools;
  • HTML and XML (basic knowledge: errors, response codes)
  • Browsers knowledge (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari)
  • Javascript Coding (basic knowledge)
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing environment with commitment to support service and teamwork.
  • Willingness to work evenings to 10 p.m.
  • Good communication skills (both written and oral)
  • Ability to learn quickly and manage time efficiently
  • Excellent customer service experience or attitude


  • Manage online class delivery and ensure course readiness each term
  • Collaborate with faculty and colleagues in the creation of new courses or templates
  • Migrate and organize course content into Blackboard using University style guides
  • Coordinate the effective integration of instructional resources and best practices into both online and traditional teaching
  • Consult with faculty and provide resources necessary to consult/train on the uses of various kinds of classroom and online software and hardware applications. 
  • Assess training needs and recommend which technologies are best suited for various programs
  • Provide in-depth support and troubleshooting for Blackboard course management
  • Assist faculty in the design of course-related web pages including standard html, forms, and scripts
  • Maintain html code for specified pages and sites; general troubleshooting with specific web issues
  • Integrate pages with global, including scripts and style sheets
  • Maintain HTML and XHTM code specific to mobile devices (application and browser capability)
  • Maintain high readability across wide range of browsers and users consistent with ADA guidelines
  • Recommend the appropriate tools, media and teaching strategies to accomplish course goals and outcomes
  • Develop and deliver ongoing faculty training while staying within project timeline
