English Language Center (ELC) Specialist
Middletown Campus (2 positions)
ELC Specialist to be responsible for teaching, tutoring, advising and otherwise supporting English language learners enrolled at Miami University Middletown's English Language Center. This is a full-time, 12-month position; anticipate appointment will begin August 1.
Middletown Campus: ELC Specialist to provide support for students in the English Language Center (ELC). The English Language Center is an intensive English program preparing students for academic purposes and college success. The primary focus of this position is to teach approximately two to four ELC courses a semester. Courses may be any ELC course in levels 1-5 including: Reading/Writing, Listening/Speaking, Grammar, Pronunciation, Integrated Skills, ACE 112: Advanced Communication Strategies, ACE 113: Reading and Writing in Academic Contexts, ENG 108: U.S. Cultures & Composition for L2 Writers, ENG 109: College Composition for L2 Writers, or other courses or workshops as needed. Additionally, this person may assist as needed with advising students regarding courses and degree programs; tutoring students as needed and assist the training of peer tutors; communicate and collaborate with the faculty and staff on all campuses of Miami University; research best practices and policies in ELL programs including conducting research as it relates to curriculum development, academic support, intensive English programs, and TESOL; attend all staff meetings, planning meetings, and other meetings related to the ELC; develop and deliver study skills workshops, programs, or learning labs for language learning when appropriate; research, develop, and implement innovative ELL support programs for international students; attend regional and national professional conferences related to TESOL, developmental education, learning assistance, and academic support; investigate, locate, and secure grant opportunities; prepare reports for associate director of ELC pertaining to position responsibilities and program effectiveness; perform other duties as assigned by the associate director of ELC.
Master's degree in a related field and TESOL endorsement or certification; experience working with non-native speakers of English; experience with curriculum development; strong interpersonal, cross-cultural communication and organization skills.
Master's degree in TESOL; college-level teaching experience in ESL composition and/or an intensive English program; understanding and ability to relate to a non-native speaker's experience.
