The Athletics Business Manager will be responsible for the oversight and management of the Athletic Department’s financial and business operating activities. Working within the University’s Office of Budget and Financial Planning under the guidance of the Budget Manager, this position will play a vital role in managing the operating budget, overseeing departmental purchasing activities, preparing financial analysis to support informed decision making, and handling all day-to-day financial matters.

Assist in the coordination and development of the Athletics Department annual operating budget. Work closely with department budget owners to define operating expense needs and to allocate budget resources.
Meet with department budget owners and management on a regular basis to review budget vs. actual expense status. Partner with department budget owners to prepare mid-year expense projections and analysis to ensure annual expense remains within budget limits. Analyze, interpret and communicate results and recommendations in a clear manner.
Evaluate the impact of budget requests and provide recommendations.
Oversee all department purchasing activities and review all purchase requests for goods and services against the scope of the budget. Monitor all purchase requisition and P-card transactions are in compliance with University purchasing policies and procedures. Evaluate and recommend process improvement to the purchasing process.
Partner with University Procurement to maximize purchasing cost effectiveness through competitive bidding, purchasing contracts, volume discounts, etc.
Provide ongoing financial leadership and support to management, staff, and coaches.
Support Title IX compliance through annual budget development and ongoing financial analysis.
Recommend new business procedures and improvements in efficiency and follow through on design and implementation.
Provide ongoing training and support to new and existing Athletics staff on the effective use of system tools/reporting and the understanding of relevant policies and procedures.
Other ad-hoc duties as assigned.
BS Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; MBA a plus.
5+ years relevant broad financial experience that includes budget management and analysis.
Advanced Microsoft Excel Skills.
Experience working with ERP systems.
Experience working in a higher education environment is a plus.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to clearly present results.
Excellent critical thinking, problem solving, interpersonal, and communication skills (verbal, written and presentation skills).
Proven ability to identify and contribute to business process improvement and manage change successfully.
Excellent organization, project and time management skills.
Ability to communicate and explain financial issues to non-financial professionals and to interact well with all levels within the organization.
Self-directed and results-orientation, demonstrating initiative and follow-through. Strong customer service skills.
