Detailed Job Description

With specific direction, installs and maintains hardware and operating systems for servers and related components. Installs and maintains business applications running on the systems. Enforces procedures and solve technical issues to ensure availability, reliability, stability, and scalability of systems. Provides advanced support on technical and functional issues for IT Systems. This includes general maintenance, security and vendor-supplied updates, basic administration, Ad Hoc reporting, and execution of processes and procedures for ongoing management of the systems environment. The Systems Specialist will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of assigned systems and their integration with other institutional systems and business processes.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with an associate’s degree in Information Technology or related field and one year of related experience in Information Technology.

Preferred Qualifications

This is a Career Ladder position and will be placed at one of the following levels depending on qualifications:

Level I: Graduation from an accredited institution with an associates degree in Information Technology or related field, plus 1 year of experience related to the essential functions/duties, 6 months of which must be directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position, administering and maintaining enterprise-level IT systems is preferred; OR any combination of higher education and experience directly related to the essential functions/duties totaling three years, 6 months of which must be directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position.

Level II: Graduation from an accredited institution with an bachelors degree in Information Technology or related field; OR any combination of higher education and work experience totaling four years related to Information Technology, one of which must be directly related to the administering and maintaining of enterprise level IT systems.

Level III: Graduation from an accredited institution with an bachelors degree in Information Technology or related field, plus 1 year of experience related to the essential functions/duties administering and maintaining enterprise-level IT systems is preferred, three years of which must be directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position; OR any combination of higher education and experience directly related to the essential functions/duties totaling five years, 3 years of which must be directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position. Successful completion of one current industry recognized certification within the first year of employment, that is directly related to the essential functions/duties of the position is required.

Knowledge

Knowledge of at least two of the following: Linux, MySQL, Oracle, Apache, XML, Mac OS, Window OS, NOS, and Cisco IOS.
Knowledge of storage technologies such as SAN or NAS.
Knowledge of eDirectory, Active Directory, and LDAP directories.
Knowledge of load balancing, clustering, and cashing procedure and processes.
Knowledge of Database and Database language such as SQL, PL/SQL, MySQL, SQL Server, and MS Access.

Skills

Skill in customer service, interpersonal, verbal, and written communications.

Abilities

Ability to work in a customer service, team-oriented, collaborative environment, highly self motivated with the ability to learn quickly.
Ability to learn TCP/IP and application network protocols, firewall management, operating system configuration, anti-virus software, relational database(s).
Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language.
Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software problems and researching technical issues.
Ability to maintain systems hardware including Core, Distribution, and Edge Switches.

Pay Range

$15.23 to $23.49 per hour DOE
