Detailed Job Description

OFFICIAL TITLE:                          Staff Assistant, Police Lieutenant

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:        Reports to the Captain or Chief of the University Police department 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:      Under minimal supervision by the Captain or Chief of University Police, this position will serve as primary supervisor for various divisions within the University Police Department 

  1. Supervise University Police officers, Institutional Security officers and Dispatchers
  2. Perform Evaluations of Officers based on personal observations and appropriate records. 
  3. Develops and implements various training and crime prevention programs for departmental and other professional staff members
  4. Manages and maintains evidence room and associated documents
  5. Manages on-site investigations and acts as a liaison to municipal, state, federal and other university law enforcement agencies
  6. Perform other duties as assigned/required

Requirements

  1. Candidate must have at least five years of full experience in a police or military police position. 
  2. Successful candidate must have graduated from a full basic police academy and must be eligible for appointment as a Special State Police Officer under Chapter 22C, Section 63 of the Massachusetts General Laws. 
  3. Candidates must have experience working with diverse populations, must have the ability to deal with young adults, faculty and staff in a diverse environment.
  4. Must be able to work with other police agencies in a positive and professional manner.
  5. Experience and training related to investigations and Crime Scene Processing.
  6. Candidate must have an Associate's degree in Criminal Justice or related field. 
  7. Must have and retain a valid driver’s license and a valid license to carry firearms.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ten years of full-time College/University, Municipal, State, Federal or Military Police experience.

2. Three years' experience in supervisory role within a Police Department.

3. Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field
