Counsels with students and parents at West High School in Salt Lake City to develop an individualized intake summary and education plan. Offers customized services and develops and implements activities and programs to assist students in successfully graduating from high school and preparing for and attending college. Monitors academic progress, by tracking attendance and GPA and provides feedback and assistance to students. Hires, trains and supervises GEAR UP tutors at West High School.
Graduation from an accredited institution with a master’s degree in Counseling & Guidance, Educational Psychology, Social Work, or related Social Science field and two years of full time professional employment related to the Summary of Duties.
Graduation from an accredited institution with a master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social science, or a related field and two years experience related to the Summary of Duties with at least one of those years counseling at-risk students.
Strong knowledge of low-income, minority, and at-risk high school and college student populations.
Knowledge of high school, two-year college program, and traditional four-year college graduation requirements.
Knowledge of educational and employment problems of special groups including low-income and at-risk youth, minorities, non-native English speakers, and those with learning or physical disabilities.
Knowledge of adolescent development.
Knowledge of labor market characteristics and variety of occupations and industries.
Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications.
Excellent skills in academic counseling, career guidance, high school student retention and graduation strategies, college-readiness strategies, scholarship awareness and first-generation college student preparation.
Skill in academic and outreach program development.
Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
Effective interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and public-relations skills.
Experience in rapport-building techniques.
Skill in data tracking, record keeping, writing reports, and maintaining student and staff records.
Ability to collaborate effectively with other personnel, partners, and external parties.
Ability to create presentations and present them effectively and professionally to diverse audiences.
Ability to receive feedback and implement changes as needed.
Ability to work independently on a multi-task level and prioritize and follow projects and assignments through to completion in a timely manner.
Ability to deal with diverse personalities and a high-stress environment.
Ability to network with various student-sponsoring agencies and programs.
