Located in suburban Birmingham, Samford University is the largest privately‐funded and fully‐accredited institution of higher learning in Alabama. The University Library serves the university community of more than 4,800 undergraduate and graduate students and more than 700 full‐time employees. 

Position Description: The Reference and Research Services Department of the University Library comprises instruction, departmental outreach, online resource maintenance, and government documents repository activities.  Working in a team environment, the incumbent coordinates the work of four librarians and numerous student workers and is actively engaged in teaching, providing reference service, participating in collection development, developing and implementing online resources in coordination with the Automation Librarian,  and serving as a liaison to one or more academic units. The chair schedules student workers and faculty to ensure the smooth running of all areas of the department during all hours of library operation.  In cooperation with librarians and staff, the chair develops and maintains policies and procedures for the department.  As a member of the library management team and reporting to the University Library Dean, the incumbent plays a critical role in strategic planning, assessment, and collaboration with faculty and staff founded in collegial relationships with all campus stakeholders and based on defined outcomes that support the library and institutional mission. 

Minimum Qualifications: M.L.S./M.L.I.S. or equivalent from an ALA‐accredited institution. Five years progressively responsible experience in an academic setting, including supervisory and administrative experience. A demonstrated excellence in teaching and in providing reference service; and demonstrated broad experience in library assessment practices, with particular expertise in assessing student learning outcomes. The individual will be a dynamic, user-oriented professional with demonstrated strong communication, analytical, interpersonal, and leadership skills as well as demonstrated knowledge about best practices and current trends in academic library services. 

Rank and Salary: Twelve‐month, non‐tenure track, faculty appointment; salary commensurate with experience; generous benefits/vacation package; tuition remission.
