Detailed Job Description

This position functions as an entry level professional in the administration of the University’s infrastructure, upgrading and supporting the University’s network. This position will provide assistance in the support of the University’s wireless, Domain Name Servers (DNS), andManagement of the University’s Class B IP address space. This position assists in equipment replacement and maintaining the networking group’s support servers (wireless HiveManager, SolarWinds, NetMRI, etc), backing up that equipment and maintaining that equipment. In addition, the position will assist with the network work-studies, will learn IT service management and problem solving. The position may attend meetings as a representative of MSU Denver networking.


-Serves as the entry level system administrator for the wireless networking systems of the network. Installs, configures, manages and tests active mission critical network communications between equipment such as servers, routers, switches, wireless access points and the Internet; Assists in deploying wireless networks to broadcast (SSID), policies, procedures and process to ensure reliable and continuous services. Position continuously monitors and adjusts the wireless SSIDs and access points to ensure optimal performance.
-Serves as the entry level system administrator of the routers and control systems of the network. Learns to design, install, configure, manage and test active mission critical network equipment such as routers, and switches; including all necessary cabling. Learns to develop router access control lists (ACL), policies, procedures and process to ensure reliable and continuous services.
-Assists with managing the University’s network access control (NAC). Troubleshoots end user wireless networking issues and learns to develop a solution to resolve the problem. Follows policies, procedures and processes to ensure smooth, reliable, and continuous DNS, load balancing, and wireless operation.
-Assists in upgrades and maintains the network; Diagnoses network related problems, often involving contact with end users, to identify symptoms. Isolates faults to a particular Local Area Network (LAN) and/or cabling system/set of components, examines it for non-conformance, and/or utilizes network test equipment such as a protocol analyzer to isolate the fault. Engages in repair effort or will suggest course of action as appropriate.
-Will assist in the network management and monitoring systems (InfoBlox NetMRI, Solarwinds, Aerohive, SafeConnect, ExpressConnect).

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related technical field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Training and/or exposure to the protocol (such as TCP/IP, 802.1q, 802.11n/b/g) of computer networking.
Training and/or exposure to wireless theory and technology, and network monitoring tools (such as SolarWinds, Ciscoworks LMS, Infoblox NetMRI or some other tool), and various operating systems (UNIX, Mac OS, Windows XP, Windows 7, 2000, and 2003), IT service management principals and customer service skills.
Able to walk 2 miles, climb a ladder carrying 50 pounds, be able to identify colors.

2 years of experience equals 1 year of education.

Preferred Qualifications

Working knowledge of the Cisco product line (specifically Cisco 6500s, Cisco 3750, 3560, 2960 switches), Fluke cable analyzer, Fluke NetTool, Fluke Network Assistant, Fluke protocol analyzer, Infoblox DNS and NetMRI, Safeconnect, ExpressConnect, and Aerohive
