GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Under the supervision of the Chief Academic and Student Affairs Officer, the Dean leads   student services units including: Admissions and Testing, Registrar, Financial Aid, Student Development, and Educational Support which includes programs such as recruiting and enrollment, face-to-face and online orientation, support for early-admit students, student activities, service learning, and graduation.. The Dean is responsible for facilitating the work of experienced directors to continue to reach integrated enrollment plan outcomes with a current focus on recruitment, enrollment, and student’s successful transitions to college. The Dean also facilitates the establishment of updated priorities and plans, supports daily program operations, the collection, analysis, and use of data for improvement, facilitation of innovation and staff development, and oversees budget management for assigned units. Position responsibilities also include collaborating with other offices to provide student support initiatives on campus and through related grant projects as well as active engagement with academic deans, department chairs and instructional program coordinators in the implementation of recruiting and transition events including support for the growing number of online learners.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Directly supervises and supports the work of the Director of Admission, Director of Financial Aid, Registrar, Director of Student Development, and the Director of Educational Support., including facilitation of new projects, implementation of short and long-range plans, end-of-year reporting, annual personnel evaluations, assessment activities, and ongoing program improvement
  • Works with directors to implement and update integrated recruiting, retention, student success, and marketing plans by using results from assessment activities to set priorities and design programs
  • Supports staff in implementing well-organized and advertised activities to achieve strong student enrollment   and successful student transitions to college
  • Provides hands-on support in daily operations; Contributes to implementing major activities of programs in units, meets with students, works with directors and staff to address concerning student behaviors, helps structure and support activities to address needs of high-risk students
  • Provides mentoring and support for directors and staff. Fosters inclusive and collaborative work environment; Actively participates in the recruitment and orientation of new staff as needed
  • Provides oversight of special projects including annual federal/state financial aid audits, execution of Title IX administration with students, and Code of Conduct investigations ensuring compliance with College, state, and federal laws, policies and regulations
  • Manages the judicial process including meeting with students and coordinating judicial process committees
  • Collaborates with directors to utilize enrollment data and trend analyses, relevant student and community demographic data, and other statistical information to guide planning and program improvement; shares relevant data with the Chief Academic and Student Affairs Officer and the President’s Staff which includes deans, HR Director, and the Chiefs of Finance and Institutional/instructional Technology
  • Collaborates with directors and units across the college to facilitate successful programming that includes recruiting and admissions events, new student orientations and extended student success programming, availability of web resources regarding all related support services, enhancing processes for successful enrollment of online learners, implementation of program changes related to state policies for developmental course placement, and education regarding financial aid and first-time college enrollment processes
  • Builds positive partnerships with schools and in the community to facilitate successful student transitions to College; Facilitates enrollment for employees of businesses seeking GCC course delivery partnerships
  • Works with directors to develop and manage annual budgets for student services units
  • Fosters collaboration between student & academic affairs personnel in order to implement best practices in co-curricular programming and provision of support services that result in holistic student development and academic achievement
  • Serves on the Dean’s working group and President’s Staff; participates in shared governance processes
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of grants related to work of supervised units
  • Facilitates updates to program-related websites; Collaborates with directors and others on the use of the web and other technology resources to improve student communication, recruiting, enrollment, and retention

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implements activities that support the open admission and quality education mission of the college
  • Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

 

REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:

  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Student Personnel Administration, Student Development, Higher Education, Counseling, Public Policy or related field
  • 8 years of Progressive higher education administrative leadership experience that includes work in enrollment services or retention; higher education experience needs to include direct service to students
  • A track record of producing programmatic innovation and positive changes that support student enrollment and success
  • Ability to create effective work teams and to add to the outcomes produced by a group of experienced, energetic, successful, and dedicated program directors
  • Experience working with and supporting educational success of students with diverse cultures, experiences, circumstances, and backgrounds
  • Experience using enrollment and assessment information or other relevant data for planning, and ability to use data-based management systems for program improvement;
  • Familiar with disability services and regulations
  • Comfortable using technology and supporting new applications of technology to enhance communications with students and the successful educational progress of students
  • Knowledge of higher education collective bargaining agreements and the ability to work effectively within these agreements
  • Evidence of commitment to the community college mission including access, student success and the ability to apply a learner-centered approach to leadership responsibilities
  • Budget management experience
  • Record of promoting support for diversity, inclusion and mutual respect
  • Ability to create a collaborative and supportive working environment and to contribute to a positive learning environment for students
  • Ability to collaborate across campus on key activities such as recruitment, enrollment, orientation, student development, and retention initiatives
  • Experience designing and implementing integrated planning activities
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills including the ability to support multiple programs with varying deadlines and needs; Ability to guide multiple student services offices with intersecting missions.
  • Ability to articulate a clear vision and priorities for program development and implementation
  • Problem-solving skills for day-to-day operations and emergencies
  • Ability and desire to mentor new and experienced professionals
  • Excellent public speaking and facilitation skills with small and large groups
  • Ability to speak constructively and persuasively about unit needs and opportunities
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Ability to guide and grow programs including those involving community partnerships

PREFERRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:

  • Doctorate in higher education, student development, or other field related to the position
  • 10 or more years of experience in Student Affairs that includes work with students and leadership in enrollment services in an open-admissions institution
  • Experience developing and refining educational policy
  • Experience working within college collective bargaining agreements
  • Demonstrated leadership and educational-support-program development in a Community College setting
  • Experience developing and implementing a plan that integrates recruiting, admissions, orientations, student development and transitions programming, and marketing
  • Experience with grant development and management in an area directly related to this position
  • Teaching or training experience at the college level

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Directly supervises the activities and performance of relevant program leaders including the Director of Admission, Director of Financial Aid, Registrar, Director of Student Development, and Director or Educational Support
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with GCC’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include implementing relevant search processes, orienting and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising and addressing performance; addressing complaints and resolving interpersonal problems, and creating an atmosphere of innovation and mutual respect
