The Division of General Internal Medicine (DGIM) has a long-standing commitment to patient care, education, and research. The Division’s extensive academic infrastructure includes the Center for Research on Health Care (CRHC), a large-scale enterprise devoted to health services research, and the Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE), the University of Pittsburgh’s premier center for education and training in clinical and translational research.
The Medical Editor and Writer will provide professional writing and editorial services to the Division. Principal duties will be to: 1) edit manuscripts to be submitted to professional journals; 2) assist junior faculty and fellows to organize and prepare their manuscripts for publication; 3) edit grant proposals to be submitted to funding agencies; 4) teach or lecture in courses offered by theICRE; 5) edit reports, newsletters, brochures, Web pages, Web modules, and other documents; 6) compile lists of faculty publications, awards and activities for reports; 7) help faculty members prepare their CVs and multiple types of information needed for promotion and tenure; 8) help the division chief prepare letters of recommendation for promotions and tenure decisions.
The Medical Editor and Writer position requires strong writing, editing, and oral communication skills in the English language; demonstrated experience in developmental and/or substantive and copy editing; and medical or scientific background knowledge. The Medical Editor should also have experience in managing multiple priorities, working under deadline, and have experience working with different style guides (e.g., AMAAPA, etc.). Preferred qualifications include 
experience in higher education, especially experience in publishing academic papers. Candidates must possess a demonstrated ability to negotiate diplomatically with students, staff and faculty colleagues, the ability to work well independently or as part of a team, and sensitivity in working with a diverse population.

Minimum Education Level Required: Master's

Overall Related Experience Level Required: 3-5 years experience

 

Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position: Four or more years doing developmental and/or substantive and copy editing. Medical and scientific background knowledge. Experience in higher education, with publishing academic papers; experience working with different style guides (e.g., AMAAPA, etc.)
